Johnnie Joseph "Joe" Young, 87, went to be with his Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 12, 2025 at his home in the Yauhannah Community of Georgetown, SC. He was born on February 4, 1938 to the late Henry (Doc) L. Young, Sr & Hazel West Young in Yauhannah.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Linda Mincey Young and his daughters, Wendy (Phil) Young Adams and Renee (Greg) Young Thompkins both of Georgetown, SC and Leigh Abbott of Murrells Inlet, SC, his grandchildren Travis (Amber) Brown, Robert Rader, Joey (Erin) Rader, Jessica Small, Gregory (Amber) Thompkins, Nicholas (Bevan) Thompkins and Lola Abbott, great grandchildren, Kara (Kolbey) Watford, Kayla (Tyler) Lewis, Daylon Brown, Emma Brown, Ansleigh Rader, Ethan Rader, Natalie Small, Elena Rader, Deanna Rader & Charlie Brown, Lynnlee Thompkins, and Bellamy Thompkins, Great-Great Grandchildren, Prestyn, Masyn, Amelia, Oakland & Della Mae and one brother, Lamar (Sally) Young.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Deanna Young Rader Avant of Georgetown, SC, his brothers, Hank Young, Larry Young, Deryl Young & Michael Young and two sisters, Jacquolene Young Gould & Donna Young Thompson.
Joe was a graduate of Winyah High School and attended Clemson University. He served in the National Guard for 10 years. He was the President/Owner of Low Country Forest Products, Inc and was passionate about the forest products industry he spent his life working. He was the Forestry Association's 1993 Board Chairman; our 1998 Outstanding Logger of the Year; and 2000 Distinguished Service Award recipient. He received the Jimmy Watkins Community Service Award from the SC Timber Producers Association in 2003 and the National Outstanding Forestry Activist Award from Forest Resources Association in 2016.
He was elected to SC House of Representatives in 1977 and received the Order of the Palmetto Award in 1978. He served on the Santee Cooper Board of Directors for 12 years and served a term on the SCDOT Commission Board. He served on the Georgetown County Planning Commission.
Above all else, Joe's life was marked by his love for Jesus and shared his faith with the world. At age 80, Joe authored "The Word For Today" which is a family oriented devotional aimed to increase the reader's faith. He was a former member and layman of Wayne Methodist Church, former member of Mt.Tabor Baptist Church and served as the pastor of Waccamaw House of Worship. Joe founded Trinity At Topsaw in 2008 for Pastors and Youth to have a place to experience nature and draw near to God in a beautiful place.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked donations to be made to Trinity At Topsaw by mail at 2183 Upper Topsaw Rd, Georgetown, SC 29440.
A funeral service will be held at Mount Tabor Baptist Church on Monday, September 15, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in the Mount Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the Downtown Chapel of Mayer-Ethridge Funeral Home on Sunday, September 14, 2025 at 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M.
