Katherine Scott Obituary

Katherine McMakin Scott, 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at her home surrounded by her family. Born in Moncks Corner, SC, she was the daughter of the late John Leon McMakin and Thelma (Strickland) McMakin, both of Kingstree, SC. Katherine was a member of Herbert Memorial United Methodist Church. She graduated from McLeod Infirmary School of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science in nursing. She spent her nursing career at Williamsburg Hospital, Georgetown Memorial Hospital, and for the late Dr. George Varn. After semi-retiring, she worked at local assisted living homes. Her hobbies were gardening and sewing. Katherine was the owner of Scott's Stitch and Sew, formerly on Front Street and then on Highmarket Street in Georgetown SC. Katherine is survived by James E Scott, her husband of 66 years; her children, Elizabeth "Beth" Scott Prevatte (Skipper), Sheryl Jean Williams (Macajiah), and Marie Evelyn Curtis (late Woody Curtis); her grandchildren, John Scott Prevatte (Rebecca), Alexandria Grace Prevatte, Amber Katherine Williams Meadows (Steven), Kacie Wheeler Williams Floyd (Grant), Terrence James Paul Mason, Woody Preot Hale Curtis, and Pierce Merritt Curtis (Bonnie); great-grandchildren, Emerson James "Emery" Prevatte, Ada Briggs Prevatte, Colt Alexander Nimz, Scarlett Rose Nimz, James Paul "J.P." Mason, Mary Eloise Mason, Hadley Katherine Meadows, Dollie Mae Floyd, and Dolie Watts Prevatte, who is due to be born in August 2025, and a multitude of nieces and nephews that she loved very much. She was predeceased by her brothers, John and Samuel McMakin, and sons-in-law, Terrence Paul Mason and Marion "Woody" Curtis. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the extended family and friends that made this journey a little easier because you cared. We also want to thank Amedisys Home Health and Hospice and SC House Calls and Senior Helpers for the dedication and compassion shown to Katherine throughout her illness. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, June 14, 2025, at Herbert Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown, with private burial to follow at the Parrott's Cemetery in Kingstree, SC. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM until the service, also at the church. Katherine's favorite color was red; the family requests that guests wear something red in her honor. The Downtown Chapel of Mayer-Ethridge Funeral Home, 843-546-4184, is handling the arrangements. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Katherine, please visit our Tree Store.
