Michael Schroer Obituary
Pawleys Island
Michael L. Schroer of Pawleys Island passed away peacefully at Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital the afternoon of Wednesday May 28, 2025. Mike was born in Butte, Montana; he was the second son of Chuck and Donna Schroer. He moved to Georgetown from Maryland, and of all the places he lived throughout his life, he was most at home in Pawleys Island.
Mike leaves behind his loving and devoted wife, Trish and his mini-dachshund, Netty. Trish will always cherish the time that she was gifted to have shared with Mike and feels a deep loss, with his passing.
Mike is survived by his brother, Mark (Betsy) of Cape May, NJ; his brother, Joe of Myrtle Beach; his brother, John (Sonya) of Pawleys Island; his sister, Lee Ann Schroer Amann of Castle Hayne, NC; his brother, Jim (Helen) of James Island; and his sister, Jean (Winfred) Pieterse of Georgetown. Winnie was more like a brother to Mike than a brother-in-law, and not only a hunting and fishing buddy, but a "cohort in crime".
Also left behind to suffer Mike's passing is his sister-in-law, Mary Sue Camlin of Andrews, brother-in-law, Darby (Vickie) Fulton of Salters. Along with friends and neighbors, Todd Hazzard (Karen) and TJ Skerl (Sandi) of Pawleys Island. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Mike always like to say that Todd and TJ were the sons he wished he'd had. He also had a very special relationship with his nephew, Ron and also his nephew, William.
Mike leaves behind a son from a previous marriage, David (Keely) of Cayce, SC and many western cousins in Montana, Oregon and Washington. Many Pawleys Island and Georgetown friends will also mourn his loss and cherish his memory.
Mike was predeceased in death by his father, Charles A. Schroer and his mother, Donna L. Schroer. He was very close to his mother, who let him get away with more than she should have, because as she so often said, "He's just so dang cute!"
Mike was a loving husband, brother, uncle, and friend. He was a man of character and strength. He was knowledgeable and passionate and often withheld his true self from others.
Mike was good at most things he attempted and was an accomplished carpenter, builder, hunter, and fisherman. He was talented and respected and well-known as a building contractor. Mike specialized in tackling difficult jobs others wouldn't. He was admired for his determination to get the job done. Mike owned and operated Micon, Inc., until his stroke in November of 2019. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter. Mike had a keen eye, and was a gifted marksman, bringing home ducks, deer, doves, geese, and turkeys.
Mike always got his limit in a dove field and excelled at flounder fishing, which earned him the nickname, Captain Flounder.
Mike enjoyed cooking and preparing meals for family and friends. He had a special talent for cooking ducks, geese, doves, turkeys, ribs, and bar-be-que. His entrees for the family get-togethers during the holidays were legendary.
Mike always had a story to tell and although he was unable to tell his stories after his stroke, he enjoyed hearing stories others had to tell. Anyone who has spent any quality time with Mike over the years surely has a "Mike" story to tell.
Mike was well-liked by all who knew him. He had a tenacious spirit, an alluring charm, and a beguiling smile. He was very conservative in his thinking and views, which didn't always endear him to others.
This year, had Mike lived, Mike and Trish would have celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary in August. He was a great fisherman and found the catch of his life in Trish. She worked tirelessly to take care of Mike after his stroke and always did so with a willingness that never faltered.
Mike wasn't necessarily a religious man, but he believed in Jesus and God. He was very spiritual and found comfort and peace in the beauty of nature and all it offered him. He was a true patriot, who believed in the principles to which our country was founded.
For those who really knew Mike, they knew he was a man's man. Although he had lost a part of himself, due to his stroke, he had found something, too. He was learning how to be a better boat. He will be dearly missed.
Heartfelt thanks are extended to Winfred and Jean Pieterse. Mike had a special bond with his sister, Jean. Also to be thanked are neighbors and friends, TJ and Sandi Skerl and Dennis and Tammy Foley. Their help and support in the days, months, and years, after Mike's stroke was invaluable to Mike and Trish and meant more than words can express.
Michael, loving husband, brother, uncle, and friend, you lived a good life, you fought a good fight. Now may you rest and find peace.
