You know the old saying, "better later than never"? Well, this applies here. I recently learned from someone about Mrs. Birkett's passing from an old high school friend. Even though I had not talked to her in 30 years I wanted to share a memory. By the way I should back up and say I am sorry to the family and especially to Les for your great loss. You see Les and I were boyfriend and girlfriend for a year when I was a freshman. He was a sophomore. Anyway, Mrs. Birkett was always kind to me when Les took me to their home on Wycoff. I think it was Wycoff, ANYWAY, my parents didn't get to know his parents as well because my Dad was very strict about young girls dating boys before age 16.
However, one time I left all these love letters I received from Les in my Math book. Big mistake. My Dad drives straight to his home and you can basically figure out what happened next. But, Mrs. Birkett was so kind to me with advice after that incident it led me to leave this message. She basically said what we do as teens can have lasting results. Years later I ran into several times over the years but the last time I was with my boyfriend in Manette and had asked her about Les and was updated then joked with her if he had found someone who did not grow up on Morgan Rd or her first name wasn't Ann or Anne. She laughed because earlier that year she had made a reference on the coincidence. That was a long time ago as well. Anyway, again to the entire Birkett family my sincerest condolences. She was a classy lady!

Jerry and Les shared that on the day they laid Betty to rest at Forest Lawn Cemetery, that Tuell McKee sent over two interns to assist at the grave side service. They were impeccably dressed and read the Lord's Prayer and other items that the family wanted read. A beautiful bouquet of dalias were placed on her grave site that were grown at the Seabeck Dalia Garden, which were very fragrant and gorgeous. The Urn was Blue Cobalt with large white birds flying Betty to her next home. She was placed in the vault and then put into the grave site. Jerry and Les's dogs were in their truck and got inpatient and decided to escape and run around the cemetery!! Betty would have laughed at that. May she rest in peace.

Lyle and Betty were married at the age of 16 on New Years Day in 1946. Jerry was born that year, the next year Judy was born, and four years later Leslie was born. She kept very busy with the children. When they were small, Lyle and Betty added a basement and a larger house when they lived just below Pendagrast Sports Fields. Many friends and memories were made at that location. Then they made a "temporary" move to a house on South Wycoff. This ended up being their forever home in which many renovations were made. The bottom was a rental in which many characters lived, even a monkey as a house hold pet. Lyle built a two story garage which many car repairs were made and ended up getting on fire . Nygards grocery was located just three doors down the alley. We bought many after school snacks there with mom's tip money from the Melody Lane. We even had a running tab there to get what ever we needed. These are just a few memories of our junior high, high school days. I ended up going to Olympic College, Jerry went into the Army during the Vietnam War and became a Medic, Leslie graduated from West high school and got married and had a baby girl. My oh my, those were the days!!

On 24 July 2020, Betty Birkett is being laid rest, at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Heather Section, toward the back, on hillside, next to her previous companion George Martin. Jerry and Les Birkett will read the Lord's Prayer, poems and lay a special bouquet of dalias. May God rest her soul.

Mom,
So many wonderful memories, from childhood to being with you during your stay at the long term care facility. You were a beautiful person, and cared for us growing up. You had a beautiful laugh and a crazy whistle. I know you are in Heaven with your twin sister Beverly, sister Jean and your dad and mom. No more pain and streets of gold. Look forward to seeing you again. Love Judy, daughter
