Jeffrey Bernstein Obituary

Jeffrey David Bernstein

Seabeck, WA

jan. 21, 1954 to mar. 14, 2018

Jeffrey David Bernstein, M.D., a loving husband, father, and brother, and a dedicated vascular surgeon, passed away at home surrounded by his family on March 14th, 2018. He had been diagnosed with brain cancer sixteen months prior. He was born in San Francisco on January 21st, 1954, and grew up in the East Bay cities of Pittsburg and Piedmont. He was the son of Samuel and Etty Bernstein. As a child he was an avid competitive swimmer and Eagle Scout. He then proceeded to Stanford and the Chicago Medical School. He began his surgical career at the Mayo Clinic, where he completed a general surgery residency, before heading to Louisiana State University in New Orleans for a vascular surgery fellowship. At a Club Med in Mexico, he met Ruth Sessler, who would become his loving wife Ruth Bernstein. In a fitting reflection of his aquatic passions, they met in the ocean.

Jeff and Ruth moved together to Silverdale, where Jeff joined The Doctors Clinic. He spent twenty-seven years there before finishing his career at the PolyClinic in Seattle. Jeff's non-medical interests included scuba diving-in which he received a number of advanced technical certifications-bike riding, swimming, music, and spending time with his family. He also gave generously with his time and money, including spending a term as president of Congregation Beth Hatikvah and volunteering his surgical services for the United States Army at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

The Bernstein family is deeply grateful to the community for their support during this difficult time. Jeff spent his final months surrounded by friends and family, and was never at a loss for a dinner partner, a swim buddy, or someone with whom he could share a bowl of ice cream. He is survived by his wife Ruth, his sons Zachary and Ethan, and his siblings Jessica Sacher, Josh Bernstein, and Barrie Tarraday.

In lieu of flowers, we are asking for donations to be made to the Haselwood Family YMCA, which has been a source of daily solace for Jeff during the course of his illness, or to Congregation Beth Hatikvah. For the YMCA, please make your donations out to the Haselwood Family YMCA, attn. Jeffrey Bernstein Memorial Fund, at 3909 Northwest Randall Way, Silverdale, WA 98383. Checks can be made payable to the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties. For Congregation Beth Hatikvah, please make your donations out to the Jeffrey Bernstein Memorial Fund.

I was caregiver for a lady, Caryl, who was a vibrant, self-assured, opinionated, funny, ‘everywhere’ woman. I loved her. She died a year ago at 93. I sit at her grave and say, “When you are done debating things with your husband, go find Jeff Bernstein and sit by him for a spell. You will like him. He is smart, and funny, and kind, and he died too soon.” Then when my dog Lulu died last summer, I held her and said, “Go find Caryl and Jeff. You will like them and they will like you.” When I imagine a way to find peace, I imagine that those who have died prematurely, or even at their time, can find each other.

Jeffrey was my Vascular Surgeon some years ago installing the first iliac stent approved by Swedish Chief of Vascular Surgery assisted by Doctor Jason Lee. Jeffrey was so kind and informative during the whole procedure and follow-up.

We were classmates in general residency, class of 1986, at the Mayo Clinic Rochester. He was a fun, good guy, a great doctor and a talented surgeon. I was very sad to learn of his passing. My own father also died of a brain tumor.

Condolences to his family.

When we were both 13 years old, he was the first boy I ever had a crush on. This was in Piedmont, California. He liked Lisa F. better than me, she was very nice and pretty, and a cheerleader, and I was very shy, but that did not make him any less splendid in my eyes. He was always kind, very smart, had a good sense of humor, was a fast swimmer, and had a very nice family. His mother even mailed me a news article about a swimming success of his after my family moved to Texas. I must have been more transparent than I thought for her to have done that. Those months in Piedmont were some of the happiest of my youth, and he figures prominently in my memories of them. Naturally I have matured since then, but he still holds the position of the gold standard for men, which my sisters still poke me about on occasion. The world is a smaller place without him. I extend great sympathy to his family for their loss.

I only met him once. Dr. Bernstein corrected a 20-year misdiagnosis of my condition. Though there may be limited treatment, his accurate diagnosis alleviated years of guilt and anguish over fears it had all been my fault. Why? Because he told me, in clear and unwavering language, that it wasn't my fault. He made a huge impact on the quality of my life. Imagine my shock, upon reading his obituary, to learn we shared a birthday. May you who knew and loved him find peace.
