Joseph Hatfield Obituary

Joseph "Joe" Hatfield

Bothell, WA

Sept. 29, 1948 to Jan. 23, 2018

Joseph "Joe" Hatfield, age 69, passed away surrounded by family at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle on Jan. 23, 2018.

Joe was born on Sept. 29, 1948 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire to Yvonne and Robert Hatfield. Like many Navy families, the Hatfield's moved to numerous states during Joe's childhood, eventually settling in Bremerton, Washington. Joe went to Central Kitsap High School (but ultimately graduated from East High) and enlisted in the Air Force, starting his career in law enforcement as a military police officer. Upon finishing his service, Joe returned to Bremerton, joining the police department and growing an epic moustache to make himself look older. Joe would serve the Bremerton Police Department for 29 years, quickly rising to the rank of Captain. Earlier in his tenure, he graduated from the FBI Training Academy at Quantico as well as Central Washington University with a degree in Law & Justice. After leaving the PD, Joe put his law enforcement expertise to work for the Navy, serving as a security director for all of the naval bases in the Pacific Northwest. This year, Joe made the esteemed FBI Honor Roll-his name will be read aloud at a ceremony and his name added to a plaque that resides at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico.

Joe married the gorgeous and spirited Karen Hammill in 1971. Together, they raised their three children to be strong and compassionate, encouraging them to throw off the bowlines and pursue their goals with conviction. After mourning the loss of Karen in 2007, Joe married Kelly Read, his high school sweetheart with whom he reconnected at their 40th year high school reunion. Soon after marrying in 2008, they moved to Bothell, Washington.

Joe will be remembered as much for his generosity as for his wry sense of humor. He spent his evenings and weekends going out of his way to help friends and family, as well as making his yard look pristine. And if you were in need of delightful sarcasm, Joe had you covered.

Joe is survived by his mother, Yvonne Hatfield; wife, Kelly Hatfield; children, Angela Hatfield, Ryan Hatfield, and Tera Hatfield; siblings, Beth Pacheco and Richard Hatfield; and granddaughter, Carson Harris, as well as numerous family members who cared deeply for Joe.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Feb. 18, 2018 at the Kitsap Golf and Country Club. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Joe's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations on behalf of Joe Hatfield to the The Bremerton Police Department /Range at 1025 Burwell, Bremerton, WA 98337 or The Scleroderma Foundation, Evergreen Chapter, PO Box 84506 Seattle, WA 98124-5806.
