Dear Roger,
It seems like yesterday, but it was over forty years ago when we met. It was a slightly overcast morning with the sun starting to break as you and a couple of friends walked across a ball field where we huddled up with others for the start of the rowdy McNeil's Island softball team. Being from rival high schools (CKHS 78 & BHS 79), we naturally sized each other up, but as we started to play ball we discovered we liked each other. When we scored our first case of beer, we discovered we liked each other a lot.
That was the start of friendship that lasted many years. We had so much fun and there was so much laughter. Ours was a friendship like out of one of those old cowboy movies... You were the Gene Autry figure and I was the silly side-kick always behind your shoulder saying a catch-phrase like "Hey Rog... Ya wanna here something ironic???" - I would not have had it any other way.
It was only a few months ago when I saw you last. As usual, our conversation was always filled with smiles and laughter as we reminisced. We made plans, after this awful pandemic, to go out for beers at the National Tavern near where we worked (Kitsap Lumber) so many years ago. I was looking forward to it... All the shared memories and all the laughs we would have (Like when you you caught me doing 360 brodies with the Kitsap Lumber forklift). Maybe someday I'll go there for a few beers and remember my friend... But I'm really going to miss all the smiles and laughter. But right now, I am filled with a deep sadness because I always thought I'd see you again.
Roger - You were my friend. I will always miss you because I will never forget you.
With love - your friend (and trusty side-kick) always,
-Mike McWilliams
P.S.
Whatever is for you now, you're with your Father again. Please tell him I said, "Howdy". He was as kind and decent a man as I ever met.
My deepest and sincere condolences to your Mom, family and friends.
