My dad wasn't perfect, but he was as close as it gets. He grew up with no dad, and still somehow found a way to be a great father to my brothers and to me.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1967 and started out working in the motor pool before requesting a second MOS and becoming a combat engineer. After serving in Vietnam, he spent many years stationed in Germany, and built a lot of bridges in that time. He spoke fluent German, and he was one of the earliest members of the Golden Drakes MC (Main-Taunus), before eventually returning to the United States.
Tom met his second wife, Malissa, and together they began raising a family in 1981. Together they blessed the world with oldest brother Sean, my youngest brother Levi, both Army veterans, and me.
Tom was always drawnto athletic pursuits and took up inline skating well into his middle age. He excelled at the sport almost as much as he enjoyedit, and was a member of Auburn Speed Team until cancer treatment made it impossible to continue.
He lived on his own much longer than I would have preferred, but he was independant to the core and remained as such to the end. He fought small cell lung cancer bravely and with dignity for more than two years, much longer than his doctor estimated he would last. When he could fight no longer, he took his last breath only seconds before the rare February snow befell his final home in Port Orchard. My dad loved the snow, and died peacefully just in time for his spirit to pass through it one last time on its way to rest for eternity in Valhalla.
We miss you dad. Thanks for all you did for us. Thanks for never giving up.
