Anthony Burger Obituary

BURGER, ANTHONY JOHN - international gospel and classical pianist, departed this life on February 22, 2006. Son of Richard and Jean Burger, he was born on June 5, 1961 in Cleveland, TN. Having been severely burned as a baby, doctors believed he would never have full use of his hands. However, by age three, he began playing the piano on his own accord. By age five, he began study at the University of Tennessee's Cadek Conservatory of Music, the youngest ever admitted. He began touring with the gospel quartet "The Kingsmen" at age 16. He spent the last eleven years of his life as the pianist in the Gaither Homecoming Series while also focusing on his solo career. Anthony received many awards and honors in his life. He was voted "Musician of the Year" by "Singing News" magazine ten years straight until finally the award was named after him. A previous recipient of the Dove award, he has once again been nominated this year for the instrumental album of the year. He was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2000. Among other activities, he participated in the Billy Graham Crusades on several occasions. Anthony played for many dignitaries including presidents Carter, Reagan and George W. Bush. He is survived by his wife, LuAnn Burger of Franklin; parents, Richard and Jean Burger of Cleveland; sons: Anthony John and Austin McKinley Burger of Franklin; daughter, Lori Apple of Franklin; brother and sister-in-law, Randy and Linda Burger of Athens; brother and sister-in-law, Clinton and Janet Burger of Cleveland; sister-in-law and husband, Angela and Linn Durbin of Cleveland; nephews: Travis Burger and Alan Davis, both of Cleveland; nieces: Tabitha Huff, Monica Chesnutt, Hannah Durbin and Sydney Durbin, all of Cleveland; uncle and aunt, Homer and Dena Thompson of Greybull, WY; uncle and aunt, Dean and Margaret Thompson of Cleveland; uncle, Hershel Burger and aunt, Katherine Huellett, both of Cleveland; aunt and uncle, Naomi and Paul Sexton of Cleveland; aunts: Willie Murphy and Reba Sparks, both of Cleveland; aunt and uncle, Francis and Junior Whaley of Fort Wayne, IN; aunt and uncle, Lily and Charlie Pritchard of Fort Myers, FL; and numerous cousins and countless friends. A service will first be held at Christ Church in Nashville. Afterwards, in Cleveland, gathering of friends will take place at Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with a service to be held at Clingan Ridge Baptist Church. He will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Final arrangements are forthcoming. Anthony began his music career with "The Old Rugged Cross" and ended it with "We Shall Behold Him". This a testament to his life's work of bringing people to Christ so that they can join him in the Kingdom of Heaven. We will miss him, but we know that Anthony is now accompanying angels. I didn't know him until recently when I renewed my relationship with God. I was immediately astounded by his talent and conviction to our savior. He has blessed me to untold heights. I know you miss him terribly and I know his death was a shock. I'm so fortunate and blessed to have his music in my life now. I missed so much when I strayed. But with the guidance of my family and Anthony Burger, I'm gonna hear him play one day. My deepest condolences. Pamela Davis

Was just telling someone today about Anthony and that he was one of my top 3 favorite pianists of all times. Definitely miss him tickling the ivory as he worshipped the Lord with amazing music. Sending a copy of his DVD to a family member today.

I am so thankful for the time I was able to get to know Anthony, and the friendship we had. One thing that meant so much to me was that Anthony never looked down on just everyday normal people, we all meant something to him. Once you met him he knew you. With Christmas coming I am enjoying Anthony's Christmas CD's, they are so peaceful. I miss you Anthony, and think of you often.

I think of Anthony, everyday he was a very special friend of mine. Every summer I would look up all of Anthony's concerts and go to all the ones close to me. I sure miss that. I miss his smile, his laugh was wonderful. He had a wonderful sense of humor. I will be waiting till the day I can see him again and get a concert from him on the grand-piano. Right now I will settle for video's and CD's. Anthony will always hold a special place in my heart.

We were so blessed to have Anthony play at our church a few months ago. I was so taken by his playing, that I was just mesmorized. He just has that way about him. In all my years I have never heard such a fantastic piano player. He was just praising the Lord! You could just feel the Holy Spirit in that santuary. I was really saddened by his sudden death. I know that the Lord must have wanted him up there with Him! Our loss is His gain!

I have been so sad since hearing about Anthony's death. I have always enjoyed his piano music and especailly so after hearing his story about beginning to play the piano at age 3. I always enjoyed hearing it each time I saw him. I have seen him numerous times in the Knoxville-Maryville-Pigeon Forge area. My deepest sympathy goes out to each of you and my thoughts and prayers are with you. Sorrow is a memory of a happy yesterday, and memories live on and on while sorrows fade away. May your memories lighten this time of loss and give you strength for each new tomorrow. Anthony will be missed by all who knew him.

What a shock and heartbreak it was this monring when I read the newspaper story about Anthony's death.

I am shutin, and every week, looked forward to the Gaither's Homecoming Programs with my very favorite piano artist, Anthony Burger. It will never be the same without Anthony. He is the best I ever heard and I am not quite twice his age.

Earth's loss is Heaven's gain. I have no doubt Anthony is at rest in the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Please know I share your sorrow. May God Bless each of you

To the family:

When I heard the news I was going to work and dropping my grandson Adam off at school. We were listening to gospel music on our car radio. They were playing “We Shall Behold Him” and I commented how beautiful, then the announcer gave the sad news of Anthony’s passing. We were so shocked. Anthony meant so much to Adam and our whole family. Just over a year ago, he came to New Market Baptist Church in New Market, TN. Adam talked to Anthony before the program and told him that he had sung his song “Let Freedom Ring” at that church. He looked at Adam’s brother Jason and asked if he could sing it, he verified that he could and that was all that was said. When he came to that part of the program he simply got up from the piano bench and asked where Adam was. Adam was in the choir, he told him to come on down. He handed the mike to him and sat down and started to play Let Freedom Ring. Adam jumped in and sang the song, an absolute chance of a life time for an eleven year old boy. They received a standing ovation. (I do not know if Anthony taped his performances, but it would be absolutely marvelous if that could be found). Anthony came back the second time to New Market and several people came hoping they would do the same.

Adam is forever more changed and will be singing for the Lord and playing, (he is studying piano).

My sympathy goes out to you. I am Adam’s grandmother and I too lost my son July 29, 2001. He was only 36 years old, married with two children. Our whole family knows your grief. My son Steve Pratt sang beautiful and played the trumpet. He loved gospel music. Heaven is ringing with the trumpet and piano and all the wonderful musicians already gone. Like your husband he also accomplished much in our immediate community and surrounding towns. He was not known world wide as your son, but he was also a wonderful son, father, husband, Christian and an all around wonderful person. We will understand it when we get to Heaven, but we are so sad because of their passing. Love in Christ

Richard and Jean,

My heart bleeds for you both in the loss of your dear son, Anthony. I lost my son, Robby, 18 months ago and can say that there is nothing to describe your pain and loss. My heart is saddened for those beautiful children of Anthony's. They, too, will feel the effect of their Dad's death for the rest of their lives. Our only consolation is that we know where Anthony and Robby are. We will see them again someday. I will keep you in my prayers. I thought Anthony was the greatest and got to know him when I was the nurse at Bradley High School. May God Bless You and Your Family.

DEAR MRS.BURGER & FAMILY:

Losing one's husband can cause a loneliness unlike any other, but having your children near will help ease the difficulty of the days ahead. With your fortitude and courage I am sure you will adjust to your new situation. I know you are grateful for the many happy years you shared with Anthony.

I came to know Anthony through the Gaither's telecast and video's. Anthony was a great piano player. I know your Anthony made friends of everyone he met, even during his last day on this side of heaven.

When there is love, any life is too short. Anthony had a way of making the joys of life contagious.

Anthony was a great asset to the Gaither's and may television viewers and we will miss him greatly

No one who knew Anthony could ever forget his charm and warmth.

I hope that our caring will lessen the sorrow that you bear.

Words cannot express what everyone is feeling about Anthony's passing. It will take time and with God's help, you will get through this. We will see Anthony real soon. I lost my husband, Neil, eleven years ago. It seems like yesterday but I know he is waiting for me, just as Anthony is waiting for you. His music will live on. I am sure he is having a great time being with Jesus and all of his gospel friends who had gone before him. What a homecoming! Bless each of you during this time.

Our favorite image of Anthony is not his playing the piano, but of each time he stood (after a performance) and looked up .. pointing to God .. and giving Him praise and glory. Anthony was truly an awesome man of God.

To Anthony's Earthly Family"

"I have only slipped away to the next room. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by my own name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effort. Life means all that it ever meant, it is the same as it ever was; there is absolutely unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of your mind because I am out of your sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near just around the corner All is well. Nothing is past, nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before-only better, infinitely happier and forever-we will all be one together in Christ.

Anthony, I will never forget your words of encouagement and friendship. You helped to make a difference in my life. To the greatest pianist I will probably hear in my lifetime, profound Christian man, missionary and one of the nicest individuals I have met, from a simple housewife who loves Jesus and draws pictures, THANK YOU. I'll continue to attempt to draw the picture you asked me to draw for those here with, God's help. I know you have beheld Him face to face and have seen the picture now with your own eyes. After worshipping at His feet for a while, you will take your seat with the choir and join them in your 'new' song. Until He is ready for me to take my seat...I'll be listening to the treasures you left and remembering you. I'll see you later.....Love In Him, Gwen Barnes Romans 8:28

I had the honor of attending a concert at Hiwassee College in Madisonville where Anthony performed and gave his testimony. The concert was around Veteran's Day and Anthony performed a medley of the theme songs from each of the branches of the armed services. It was the most powerful performance I have ever heard. He asked that the Veterans in the crowd stand as they heard their theme song played. It was one of the most moving things I have ever witnessed. There wasn't a dry eye in the filled auditorium. I have since then tried to get my home church to do the same thing on Veteran's Day Sunday, but haven't been able to get it together yet. But I haven't given up on the idea. Anthony was truly a blessing to me each time I heard him perform. He will be sadly missed by christians all over the world who knew of him.

My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with you, the family. May God wrap his arms of love around you and fill the emptiness you feel.
