He had recorded with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Long Beach Symphony, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, with the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra, and as a soloist or chamber musician on Crystal Records, W.I.M. Records, Richardson Recordings, and Hornists' Nest Recordings, and with many artists as adverse as Jewel, Luis Miguel, Jo Dee Messina, Barbra Streisand, Arturo Sandoval, Gloria Estefan, Faith Hill, Wynonna, and Prince. He was an educational specialist with Conn-Selmer Musical Instruments. Since 1999 he was a recordings reviewer for the HORN CALL, the journal of the International Horn Society. He is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles and cousins, most of Lockport, NY and Morgantown, PA and special friend, Mary Wichelt of Knoxville. Family will receive friends Wednesday, May 11 at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Life service in the sanctuary at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to www.internationalmusiccamp.com/donate. Very sorry to hear about Calvin. I will always remember fondly our trips up to Canada for ice cream last summer! I was honoured to know him, if only just briefly. My thoughts will be with you and your family.

Dear Paula,
I just heard from the quintet about Calvin and was surprised and sad to hear the news. I saw both of you last - a long time ago - during a quintet tour while we were in LA and we visited you. It must have been 1977. I was in the quintet with Calvin for two years and will always remember Calvins solid playing and his great sense of humor. Please accept my condolences. We will be thinking of you. TIM BECK

Paula,

Please accept my condolences and best wishes. Even though I did not meet Calvin personally I feel I knew him very well through the wealth of great stories passed to me by the other ABQ'ers - all lovingly told with great warm and humor. I've always felt fortunate to be linked to him in the lineage of ABQ horn players.

Paula,

Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. I doubt there are many better repositories for stories and good memories than the old ABQ trunk from the early years.

Calvin's music, joy and goodness will live on with all of us who knew him.

To the Smith Family: My thoughts and prayers are with you as you deal with the sudden and sad loss of your loved one. I have been a season ticket holder of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra since 1982 and I have listened to the wonderful music of the orchestra for many years. I am a UT faculty member as well and know of his contributions to the students. He will be missed by many and heaven gained a great musician and teacher. May God bring you comfort and peace during such a time of heart ache. Mary Lynn Brown

I had the privilege of teaching across the hall from Calvin for my years at UT, and whenever we saw each other, anywhere, he'd say, "It must be Thursday!" From anybody else, that would have gotten old and corny, but because of his genuine great humor and sunny demeanor, it was always funny. I'm going to miss that, a lot. My thoughts are with your family.

To Calvin Smith's family: read about Calvin's "graduation" from friend Shelley Binder's facebook page. I didn't know him, but am so grateful and inspired to learn of his life and music that honored Jesus with so much excellence. (I'm looking forward to hearing him play in heaven!) I pray you will be deeply comforted in the presence of the Lord with you at this time. And by the knowledge that Calvin is blessed and whole, safe in His arms. May He be real to you in your deep grief. God bless you!

I will never forget all the kindness Uncle Calvin has showed to me since I was young. My prayers are with you, Aunt Paula, Jeremy & Nathan!

Cal and I shared much throughout High School. He was a true friend, and any time we were together we always picked up right where we left off...even if it had been years since we'd seen each other. I will miss his quick wit, his humor, and his friendship. Paula, Nathan and Jeremy will remain in our thoughts and prayers.

Calvin had (has) a tremendous influence on my life. He was my teacher, mentor and friend. When we all have to make the same journey Calvin has made, we shall see him there, old friendships renewed under the light of the Father and the Son. Til then, may God bless us to endure to the end and continue to seek that peace which passeth all understanding and remember that all things are done in the wisdom of Him who knoweth all things. My sincere condolences.

We will miss our neighbor. We watched our children play, eat, sleep over, walk in the woods and grow into adulthood. We watched each others house, dogs and Gods wonderful shrubs, trees, grass and weeds grow-quite naturally. Now that you have, so gloriously, completed Gods work on earth, you can watch us as we also complete our tasks. And in the blink of Gods eye, we will happily join you…Say “Hi” to our loved ones. We have been blessed by your presence.
