David Traver Obituary
Knoxville, TN
David Madden Traver, age 95, died Monday, January 21, 2019 at Northshore Senior Living in Knoxville, TN. Born November 20, 1923 in Wellesley, MA, he was educated at Andover Academy and Amherst College, Naval Flight School at Pensacola and served as a pilot in the U.S. Navy.
After moving to Knoxville, he met and married the former Helen Dunlap in 1951, who preceded him in death after 63 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his
parents Clarence and Margaret Traver of Boston; brother William Traver; son David M. Traver, Jr.; daughter Elizabeth Traver Gowan. He is survived by daughters Susan W. Traver and Margaret T. Madden, son Douglas Dunlap Traver (Catherine), and 9 grandchildren: Traver Madden (Leighann), Dale Madden (Caroline), Ashley Clevenger (Tim), Hailey Caissie (Daniel), Douglas Traver, James Traver, William Gowan III (Anna), Wiley Gowan, and Carolyn Gowan. He is also survived by 4 great-grandsons: Wiley, Wilson, and John David Madden, Hunter Clevenger.
In his long life, he was President of East Tennessee Packing Co., served on many corporate and civic boards including First American Bank, CMS, Inc., Webb School of Knoxville, Knoxville Symphony, and was a longtime member of South Knoxville Rotary Club. He also enjoyed membership in Cherokee Country Club, Tim Duby Men's Bible Study, Men's Cotillion, and ROMEOs.
David was a founding parishioner, former Vestryman, and longtime member of Church of the Ascension.
David loved life - especially boats, planes, travel, and, most of all, his family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Church of the Ascension, 800 Northshore Dr. at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 25 with visitation to follow in the Parish Hall. Memorial gifts may be made to Church of the Ascension, attn: FOMA, 800 S. Northshore Dr. Knoxville, TN 37919 or a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be extended at www.rosemortuary.com
