Doris McCarter Obituary

Doris Ann Howard McCarter

Johns Island, SC

Doris Ann Howard McCarter, Age 78 of Johns Island, SC. Passed to her heavenly home on Saturday December 23, 2017. She was born on July 9, 1939. She is a member of First Baptist Church Concord and retired from the Knox County School System. She is preceded in death by sons Michael Jason McCarter and Jeffery Randall McCarter; mother and father Lucille and Theodore Howard; sisters Mary Lee McCoy and Martha Sue England. She is survived by husband Ralph McCarter of Johns Island, S.C.; son Jonathan Todd McCarter and wife Melinda; grandchildren, Hunter Boyd McCarter, Emmalee June McCarter, and Logan Randall McCarter all of Charleston, S.C.; sisters Barbara Jean Thornburg and husband Harold of Louisville, Ky.; Rose Marie Clevenger of Knoxville; Nina Lou Vogel and husband Stuart of Ooltewah, TN.; and brothers Charles Edward Howard of Alcoa and James Caswell Howard and wife Donna of Knoxville; brother-in-law Charles England of Windsor, VA. And a host of aunts, uncles and cousins nieces and nephews.

Doris and Ralph sealed their wedding vows on October 18, 1958 at Second Presbyterian Church, Knoxville and have enjoyed 59 years of loving togetherness.

After attending Warren Wilson College for a short time, she returned to Rich's Department Store, later to become Millers Inc, where she became buyer of two departments for lady's dresses. When we started our family, she left retailing to be a devoted mother and wife. She loved children and when our boys were both in school she answered the call to "mother" all the boys and girls at Farragut Intermediate School as Secretary. She retired from the school system after 21 years of service.

She was always active in First Baptist Church Concord in many ways. Most notable in teaching Sunday School in the children's department. In more recent years, she has been active in the "Faithful Followers" class as member and as Group Care Leader.

Doris is a lover of people and most notable was her devotion for her family. She was a key caregiver for both her mother and father during their latter years and always "mother hen" to Ralph and Jonathan and family.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:45 pm on Thursday December 28, 2017 in the Chapel at First Baptist Church Concord with a "Celebration" of Life" Service to follow at 2:00 pm with the Reverend Steve Peek, Gibbs Hammond, and Jack Davis officiating. Family and friends will then gather at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel on Friday, December 29, 2017 at 10:30 to travel in procession to Highland Memorial Cemetery for the 11:00 am interment service. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church Concord or to the church or charity of your choice. Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel is serving the family. www.rosemortuary.com

I only knew Doris for a short time, but am so glad for that time. She was such a lovely person... beautiful inside and out. May God comfort you with his love and give you strength to adjust to living without her.

Sweet Doris McCarter was a strong yet gentle woman. She could make the lowest of people feel like royalty! That's how she made us feel at Farragut Intermediate School ❤
