George Satchler Obituary

SATCHLER, GEORGE RAYMOND "RAY" (NEE SACHTLER) - of Oak Ridge, died of congestive heart failure on March 28, 2010, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Shelton, WA. He was born in 1926 in London, England, and moved several times during his youth. He served in the Royal Air Force for four years during World War II, where he met his wife Pat. They married in 1948, and lived in Oxford while he attended Oxford University where he graduated with a doctorate in Theoretical Physics in 1955. Following some years of teaching and research at Oxford, he accepted a position in the Physics Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. He moved to Oak Ridge with his family in 1959, where he worked until he retired in 1996. He wrote several textbooks on nuclear physics, won numerous awards and is well known in the science community for his own physics theorem. He lived in Oak Ridge until 2005, at which time he moved to Shelton, WA to live with his daughter and son-in-law. He is survived by his daughters; Ann Newman and her husband Craig of Gatlinburg, TN; Jacqui Satchler and her husband Tom Nichols of Shelton, WA; and grandson Tyler Newman of Maryville, TN. As well as his completely devoted feline companion, Ashanti. In accordance with Mr. Satchler's wishes, his body was donated to medical research. No memorial service will be held. As he was an avid animal lover, his family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to your local Humane Society. "There once was a fellow named Ray Who always would do things his way As one might expect His approach is direct Speaks British as dry as one may" - H. Weidenmüller 1975

I recall George mostly from being in
the same carpool with George and some
other physicists. We lived on Amherst Lane just down from Andover Circle where the Satchlers lived.
