Jacob Feld

FELD, JACOB (JACK) - former assistant principal for the New York City Department of Education who was instrumental in integrating special education programs into the intermediate schools on Staten Island, New York, died on Monday, February 12 at St. Mary's Residential Hospice in Knoxville, Tennessee. He died following a long struggle with multiple health problems. Mr. Feld began his professional teaching career in Jewish parochial schools and then joined the New York City school system. In the intermediate schools he introduced and held mock elections, paralleling the city, state and national elections. He also taught adult education for immigrants at Brooklyn College. Always emphasizing the importance of education, he was the prime example for his three children: Irving Feld of Woodbury, New York, Arlene Prager of North Las Vegas, Nevada, and Dr. Neil Feld of Knoxville, Tennessee. Mr. Feld was active in Jewish community life in Brooklyn, New York, where he served as Vice President of Shore Park Jewish Center, and Chairman of the Board of Beth Am Jewish Center. He met his wife of sixty-six years, the former Bess Wurm, during the depression. The stories of their struggles and successes provided inspiration and life lessons for their children and grandchildren. Mr. Feld is survived by his wife; three children; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, February 15th, 2007 at Temple Emanuel (Atlanta). Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park.
