Jacob Frye Obituary

Rev. Jacob Frye, III

Knoxville, TN

The Rev. Jacob "Wade" Frye, III, passed away on Monday, October 17, 2016 while in the care of Park West Hospital of Knoxville. A deacon with the Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee, Reverend Frye attended to the spiritual needs of inmate populations through his outreach ministry, while also supporting the work of St. John's Episcopal Cathedral of Knoxville. It was there that he taught bible study and confirmation classes and was a co-founder of the Cathedral's chapter of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew. Prior to becoming a member of the clergy, Reverend Frye worked for many years as both a terminal trainmaster and a detective for Norfolk Southern Railway in locations throughout Georgia and Tennessee. Originally from NC, he was born in Newton and spent his formative years in Charlotte before leaving in the late nineteen-sixties to serve his country as a U.S. Air Force officer in Korea. Upon returning home, he became a Mecklenburg County police officer and met and married his beloved wife of 38 years, "Lucy" Barnett Frye.

Reverend Frye is survived by his mother, Sue Betty Raye of Charlotte; his brother, Neal Frye of Charlotte; his sister, Lisa Saye of Durham; his step-daughter, Nancy Knight of Charlotte; as well as one nephew, six nieces, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service celebrating our beloved Wade's life will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 11, 2016 at St. John's Episcopal Cathedral, 413 West Cumberland Ave, with The Very Reverend John C. Ross officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Cathedral or donations made in Reverend Frye's memory to the American Cancer Society.
