James Dexter Obituary

James Dexter

Knoxville, TN

James (Jim) Thomas Dexter, 74, of Knoxville, TN, died on Friday August 19, 2016 peacefully in the house he lived for so many years with his beloved dogs Brindall and Gizmo. Jim lived with cancer for 2 ½ years. Jim, a war baby, was born on August 12, 1942 to Frances Kehl East and Thomas William Dexter. He attended Memphis State and settled down in Knoxville. Jim's favorite home was a camping trailer near the Tennessee River. Jim loved to play cards, make people laugh, fish, watch the Atlanta Braves and the Lady Vols basketball. He dropped everything to help his family without question, supported his struggling friends when he had so little, and dreamed of winning the lottery so he could share it with his family.

Jim was loved and admired by nephews, David, Josh and Kade; and nieces, Jenny, Katie, Kelsey, Andreea, and Lauren. Jim's antics and jokes made these nephews and nieces eager to return often to be with Uncle Jim. Regardless of what challenges Jim faced, he maintained an optimistic attitude. He is survived by his mother, Frances East, Oak Ridge, TN; son, Thomas Dexter and wife Nancy, Jackson, GA; and his sibling, Susan and Russ Hand, Knoxville, TN, Carol and Bruce Umstaedter, Madison, AL; Steve and Kay Dexter, Hanahan, SC; and Marie McGovern, San Antonio, TX; and one grandchild.

A private wake was held on August 20, 2016 with family, close friends and Father Michael Woods. If desired, friends may donate to the Colon Cancer Alliance in memory of this loving man. He was truly God gifted.
