I just recently learned of Jim's passing. He was a cousin to my husband on his mother's maternal side of the family and we worked on the family history together. He was an extraordinary man and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Being out of touch for many years, I only learned of Jim's passing recently. While belated, I wanted to offer some comments. Jim was one of only a few teachers in my years of education that made a significant impression on me. His history class was the most rewarding and enjoyable class I had in my three years (1967-70) at Webb. As the headmaster, he also was a source of encouragement and support in my transition as a teenager from Michigan to the South, a challenging cultural experience. My condolences to his family. Jim was a fine man.

One afternoon in our eighth grade Latin class, almost half a century ago, the regular teacher was out and Mr. Snodgrass was our substitute. He gave us, in those 45 minutes, an absolutely fascinating overview of the history of the Roman empire, without notes - and even more importantly, he gave us a lifelong love of history. Mr. Snodgrass will always be what so many of us will instantly and without hesitation recall as our greatest teacher at Webb. And beyond the classes in Ancient and Medieval and American History, as so many others have expressed so well, he taught us the timeless values of honesty, integrity, respect for others, hard work, discipline, and the courage to do what is right, no matter how difficult that may be. He truly lived our motto, Principes non Homines, Leaders not Men. Mr. Snodgrass, you and your family will always be in our thoughts and prayers. May God bless you.

Jim Snodgrass was very definitely "Mr. Snodgrass" to me from the 7th grade when I entered Webb through the 12th grade when I graduated. Upon graduation from college I became a fellow teacher under his leadership in the Upper School, and he encouraged me to call him "Jim." Because of the very high respect he commanded in my life, that was a difficult transition to make, but my respect was not at all diminished by coming to know him in a different context. I was just quoting him the week before he died in a deep context about his impact on my life. I will always be grateful for him.

While a student at Webb, I really did not appreciate the values and knowledge that Jim Snodgrass gave to me. But as I have grown older, his somewhat harsh words of enouragement have made me a better person. Thank you Mr. Snodgrass and may you rest in peace.

Mr. Snodgrass had a very positive influence on my life. He is a great man, and I am fortunate to have attended Webb during his tenure. My prayers are with his family.

August 18, 2012

When I entered Webb in January of my 8th grade year the Lord blessed me by giving me Jim Snodgrass as a teacher. I was also fortunate to have him for every course he taught at Webb including Ancient, Medieval, and AP American History my Senior year. This course was more like a college course and did much to prepare us for college. I still have my notebook filled with notes. He truly made history, the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln come alive for us. During that time because of his honesty integrity, and caring he also became our unofficial class advisor in matters relating to Webb, college life, and life in general.
I miss him today and give thanks for his influence on my life.

Rest in Peace Trusted Friend.

Mr. Snodgrass welcomed the girls' class of '69 to the upper school unlike the boys who thought we had invaded their turf. He treated us as equals and inspired us as a teacher and friend. Like Mr. Webb Mr. Snodgrass is the essence of Webb School. Flossie McNabb Sonneland, class of 1969

Mr. Snodgrass was the first person to send me a hand-written note of encouragement as a new ninth-grade student, and he did so at other times during my four years at Webb School. Being in administration, I didn't expect him to take such a personal interest in individual students. It meant a lot to me at the time, and in the years since I have thought back on his example of taking notice of those whom others may not. Special regards to his son Bill, a friend in college who has followed his father in service to our nation. Blessings to each of you in your grief. A good man!

Mr. Snodgrass loomed so large in my young life and showed me an entirely new, "much more interesting" perspective of history. I think we all had hoped he would be here with us longer, though I know he has wonderful future.

I learned a great deal about Ancient and American History from Mr. Snodgrass. He was an excellent teacher. He was also a strict but fair disciplinarian. He ran a tight ship in his class which made for an excellent learning environment. I think of him every now and then when I am reading my history books (one of my hobbies).

I started Webb in the 7th grade in 1959 and graduated in 1965; Mr. Snodgrass was one of my most memorable teachers. The skills he taught me contributed greatly to my success later in college. In the eighth or ninth grade, we learned to take notes and to answer essay questions. As a senior, I took his AP American history course. Over the years, his name frequently came up as I reminisced with my family. I won't forget him, and I send sincere condolences to his family.

Without any doubt, Jim Snodgrass launched me on my life path as a teacher, social scientist and human being. He must have wrung his hands countless times at my willfulness but he never gave up trying to help me. He continued his way as mentor and friend even as Kristina, our daughter, had the benefit of his help as dean and teacher. I am stunned at word of his passing but know that he rests in the palm of the Lord.

With deepest sympathy I am wrapping all who cherished Mr. Snodgrass in prayers. I also give thanks for his life and the lessons he generously shared with so many. One of the lessons he shared in chapel that I continue to embrace is to read the newspaper from back to front (rather than the usual front to back). What a different perspective this affords, and that ability to impart a different perspective was one of Mr. Snodgrass' great gifts. How blessed we were by him.

Jim Snodgrass defined the Webb experience for me. He embodied the Webb goals of passion for your subject, hard work, and high expectations. I was lucky long after graduation to be able to thank him for what he had done for me. RIP, Mr. Snodgrass.

I had the pleasure of experiencing Mr. Snodgrass's talents both as an extraordinary history teacher and as a dedicated and caring headmaster of the Upper School. I still remember so vividly to this day when I was in the 10th grade and had an extremely unpleasant run-in with the infamous Dean of Students Mr. Lee (keep in mind that I probably ranked as one of the top "goody-goodies" of the school's history!) that got me so upset I burst into tears when I got home, and my parents must have called the school livid about how I was treated. Mr. Snodgrass came all the way to our house in South Knoxville on a Saturday morning to apologize and smooth things over, which gave me even more respect for him personally and Webb School as an institution than I already had (which was and continues to be a lot!). Rest in peace, Mr. Snodgrass, in the comfort of knowing that you so positively affected so many students' lives, including mine.

I think of Mr Snodgrass often; his teaching and his example have stayed with me over the years. He was (and still is) one of the most influential educators whom I've encountered, and if I may be half the teacher for my students that he was for his, I'll count myself fortunate. Thank you, Mr Snodgrass, for who you were.

Mr. Snodgrass has been with me over the many years (Webb Class 0f '68) and in many ways. He remains in my pantheon of greatest teaches, but his gifts extended far beyond the classroom. As students we might not have been cognizant, nor appreciative, of ALL that was offering us. The ignorance of youth might have obscured our view of ALL that this remarkable man was, and ALL that he was giving, and ALL that he represented. Happily, miraculously, in his patience, optimism and wisdom, he certainly knew we were absorbing, if not the history lesson, then, more importantly, the greater messages of character, inspiration, and values. Although he would have demurred, those greater lessons were revealed in the man, the life, the example that was Mr. Snodgrass. Years (and years) following graduation, while on campus visiting Mr. Snodgrass, I had the opportunity to offer my belated thanks, appreciation and respect. My thank-you then was inadequate...it remains forever inadequate. Alan Davis Dallas, TX

As a student, I appreciated Mr. Snodgrass's respect for the minds of his students and creativity as a curriculum innovator. As a colleague, I admired Jim's steadfast commitment to his students and the school. After his retirement, I benefited from the wisdom of Jim's professional counsel. Jim was proud of the quality of leaders he helped to educate. I believe Jim significantly influenced our community and our state for good through his honorable service at the Webb School of Knoxville. Simple words can never adequately thank our teachers. I hope we make you proud.

Jim Snodgrass was the first person we talked to in 1980 when we were contemplating the Webb School for our sons. He was helpful and politely answered our questions. We appreciate his contributions in making that possible. Our sincere condolences to his family.

I had the privilege to know Mr. Snodgrass when I was a student at Webb from 1981-1985 and when I was a teacher there from 1991-1993. I am forever indebted to him for giving me a call out of the blue in the summer of 1991 to see if I wanted to apply for an English teaching position there. With his support, I got the job and with his guidance, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now, after I've been in education for over 20 years, I truly value how our friendship as a student and headmaster helped to shape my career and life direction. My condolences to all in his family - you know how special and influential he has been in many of our lives and I thank you for sharing him with us.

Jim gave steady encouragement when I started at Webb, first-time-in-the-classroom in 1970-71 . . . tho once in a great while he would say, always with a smile, "You know, I wasn't part of the interview that preceded your hiring." His support in the first couple of years of teaching led me to conclude, "I can do this . . . and it can be fun, too!" His many honors and the wide recognition he received for his teaching and school leadership are ample evidence of his significant contributions over 40+ years. I'll greatly miss talking with him at alumni gatherings. Richard Paddon, Chaplain, Webb School of Knoxville, 1970-1984
