Joe Tittle Obituary

Joe Tittle

Arnold, MD

Dr. Joe Evan Tittle died in the early morning hours of July 23rd at his home in Arnold, MD, he was 87.

He is preceded in death by Lib, his wife of 46 years, his parents Raymond and Mamie; his brother Jack; and sister Jean. Surviving are daughters Becky and Beth; granddaughter Marybeth; grandson Evan, his wife Richel, their sons Yvanne and Shanne, and their soon to be born daughter Samantha.

Dr. Tittle graduated from Knoxville High School, upon graduation he joined U.S. Navy. After his honorable discharge from the Navy he attended the University of Tennessee followed by UT Medical School, entering in his junior year. In 1950 he married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth Marie Coward. After graduating from medical school he learned he still owed Uncle Sam 8 days of service so he joined the U.S. Air Force and sailed off to the Philippines with Lib and baby Becky in tow. Following his 3 years in the Air Force he settled in Oak Ridge joining an Orthopedic Surgery practice with Dr. Paul Spray, where he stayed for 32 years and was on the cutting edge of hip and knee replacements. Dr. Tittle was an active member of the Oak Ridge community serving as the Oak Ridge Wildcats team physician (for which he was inducted into the Oak Ridge High School Athletic Hall of Fame), on the Oak Ridge School Board, the Tourism Bureau, Elks Club, Rotary International, and the Freemasons among MANY other activities. Joe was a diehard Tennessee Volunteer and faithfully attended football, basketball, baseball, and women's soccer games. He attended as many games as possible and watched the ones he couldn't make it to on TV. And you can bet he and Lib will be together cheering on the Vols come September!

Receiving of friends will be held Wednesday, July 29th, 2015 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Berry Highland West Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Thursday, July 30th, 2015 at West Hills Baptist Church at 11:00 am followed by a graveside military service at Oak Ridge Memorial Garden and fellowship back at West Hills Baptist Church. Becky and Beth,
Joe Tittle operated on me in November of 1971. I was 19 and had a parosteal osteogenic sarcoma of the distal femur. The only treatment at that time was a wide excision to remove the tumor. This was in the day before PET and all the other scans, so he had to go strictly on x-ray information and make sure he removed all the tumor. He followed up with me for 20 years and I know he found joy in the success of the operation. I am alive and well 43 years later with three children and three beautiful grandchildren. A thank you to your father.

Heaven has become more complete with the passing of Dr. Tittle. The Lord only knows the countless lives he touched through benevolence were healed. May comfort be found in his good works while with us knowing his presence is now up on high. From one Navy vet to another, anchors away, this earth's constraints bind you no more.

Beth,
I have so many great memories of many, many times spent with you and your family. Being friends since we were 7 years old I have countless fond thoughts of your Daddy (Big Daddy Wolf). From spending the night together as children to sneaking out together as teens, to still keeping in touch as adults I've bore witness to an exceptional father, Dr., sports fanatic and community leader. I know you'll miss him. What a coincidence he passed on your sweet Mama's birthday, a final gift to be reunited.

Dear Becky & Beth,
I just heard today of your Dad's passing-my most sincere condolences. I have fond memories of both your mom and dad and I know this is a very difficult time for both of you. I will keep your family in my prayers and thoughts.

Dr Tittle & Dr Spray were my doctors in 1964 when I was run over by a tractor pulling a bush-hog. While my injuries were significant, their skills resulted in my being able to walk with barely a limp for the last 50 years. I have always been grateful. Fortunately I was able to express my appreciation to Dr Tittle on more than one occasion. He will be missed, but never forgotten.

Dear Beth & Becky,
I knew your dad in several different areas. I first met him (early 60s) when my husband and I took our toddler to the offices of Drs. Spray & Tittle. At about that time your lovely family were neighbors of ours in Emory Heights. As supporters of ORHS sports we appreciated his dedication to the athletes of the school. I also worked at Oak Ridge Hospital and knew him as a member of the Medical Staff. Lastly, as president of the Oak Ridge Sports Hall of Fame, I was honored to be a part of his induction into the Hall in 2003. May the years of wonderful memories sustain you at this sad time. Your family are in my prayers.

Dear Beth & Becky,
I met your dad when I was eight at the Emergency room in Oak Ridge. I had just broken my arm and was hurt and scared. He not only repaired the break but helped to calm and reassure me that all would be well. My fondest memory of Joe, however, was as the team doctor for the football teams I played on. We used to shoot the breeze quite a bit, and watching your father work was always a treat. He was the most impressive professional I have ever known. His friendship and encouragement were invaluable. I have spoken of your father often to both friends and family. His friendship is one of the fondest memories of my youth. I pray that you find peace and comfort during this time. Your father was a truly great man.

Beth,
So very sorry to hear about your Dad. He was such a great friend to my Dad and my entire family. Your Dad was one of the few doctors that allowed me to make rounds with him during my Summers at the hospital. I didn't realize until I read his obituary he was a Navy man. I should have known! He will be very missed. Our prayers are with you!
All my best.

Dear Beth & Becky, I loved Dr. Tittle so much. He was so good and kind to me and the Oak Ridge football teams. He shared his time, his talent, & his heart for the Wildcats. His orthopedic office and time given at football practice & games was beyond fantastic. One of my fond memories is Dr. Tittle, Jack Armstrong, & myself sitting in the upper deck on the front at a U.T. football game. We had a great time. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. My heart aches for your loss and for all those who loved & cared for him. With love & my condolences

Dear Becky and Beth,

I met and fell in love with your family when asked to babysit for you girls when you were little and living in Emory Valley. I was around 14 years old and we shared fun times together drawing pictures and writing notes.

Throughout my high school years it was
special to have Dr. Tittle on the sidelines supporting the Oak Ridge High School Wildcats. He was a faithful supporter and helpful when there were injuries.

Several years after high school I was in a serious car accident and he once again played a very important role in my life. He helped me through the difficult time of recovery as both my doctor and caring friend.

I am sad for the loss now of both your Mother and your Dad. I hope that in someway my words and those of others who have shared their condolences will minister to you in your grief. May the peace of God, through His Son Jesus Christ, hold you close. Praying for you all.

In His Love,
Karen Wallace Metzel

Beth and Becky - So sorry to hear about your Father's passing. I remember a Camp Fire Girl camping trip so many years ago. He took the motor home so him and your Mother would be comfortable and he could help keep an eye out on the entire group travelling with them. He loved his family, the Oak Ridge community, the athletic teams he looked after and his Tennessee VOLS. Hold onto the wonder stories and memories, share them with your children and grandchildren so they will know what a wonderful man Dr. Joe Tittle was.

Becky & Beth,
The Lord only made one Dr Joe Tittle. He was the best team doctor I had in 45
years of coaching. Words cannot express what he was to our football team-1969-1980, of the years I coached at ORHS. A true WILDCAT & VOLUNTEER.

Sincerest thoughts and prayers to Becky, Beth and grandchildren. Your father included us in many Vol activities. I'll never forget the many memorable bike rides we shared, and how many cars nearly hit us. At least I had a great doctor by my side. Dave
