John Schaad Obituary

SCHAAD, JOHN H., JR. - 78, died on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at Ft. Sanders Hospital. Born on Sept. 30, 1927 in Knoxville, TN where his Swiss ancestors settled in 1870, he graduated from the University of Tennessee and served in the U.S. Navy. As the founder and chairman of Schaad Companies he was a leading developer in East Tennessee and served on the boards of directors of many banks. Known for his keen intellect and quiet generosity, his family, church and business endeavors were the center of his life. He was a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral, Cherokee Country Club and the Knoxville Racquet Club. Married in 1950 to Ann Sudduth Schaad, they had eight children, 21 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, John H. and Helen M. Kirk Schaad; brothers, Louis E. and James J. Schaad and sister, Helen Schaad Kiernan. Survived by wife, Ann Schaad; sister, Elizabeth Schaad; and children: John H. Schaad, III, wife, Barbara, and their children, John, IV and Joy Elizabeth Schaad, Cynthia Schaad Kelley, husband, Matthew, and their children, Matthew and David Kelley, and Matthew's children, Jackson and Eli Kelley, Mary C. Schaad Barber, husband, Philip, and their children, Brandon and Ryan Barber; Sharon Schaad, husband, Jeff Yurkoski, and their children, Sophia, Nicola and Lucas Yurkoski, James S. Schaad, wife, Jennifer Banner, and their children, Isabel and Caleigh Schaad, Michael E. Schaad, wife, Lucy, and their children, McKinley and Harrison Schaad, Patrick J. Schaad, wife, Alicia, and their children, Lindsay, P.J. and Cassidy Schaad, Diane Schaad Valeriano, husband, Rio, and their children, Grant, Lauren, Reese and Alyssa Valeriano; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral Mass 12:30 P.M. Friday at All Saints Catholic Church, 620 North Cedar Bluff Road, with Fr. Chris Michelson officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers: Louis E. Schaad, Jr., Kirk Schaad, Matthew Kelley, David Kelley, Chris Ooten and Nelson Hardwick. Honorary pallbearers: William Thompson, Harold Pierce, Robert Greeley, Dennis Coughlin and William Fleury. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of the Tennessee Valley, P.O. Box 9479, Knoxville, TN 37940 or the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis, 1659 Branham Lane, Suite F No. 227, San Jose, CA 95118-5226 (www.coalitionforpf.org).
