Knoxville, TN
Michael James Tjaarda, 53, of Knoxville, passed away Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Tennova Hospital in Knoxville. A native of Niagara Falls, NY, Michael had lived in Knoxville since 1980 and graduated with a BS from University of Tennessee. He was the former owner of Tjaarda's Restaurant in the Old City.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Marjorie Ann Tjaarda. Michael is survived by his parents, James Thomas and Lynda Reisinger Tjaarda of Fairfield Glade, TN; two sisters, Barbara Moser (Don) of Murfreesboro TN and Ellen Paulk (Butch) of Clarksville TN; along with many nieces and nephews. He was also survived by a very special friend Rebekah Garland of Knoxville.
The family will receive friends to celebrate his life Saturday, January 9, 2016 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel 6200 Kingston Pike Knoxville. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in his memory be made to Young-Williams Animal Center, 3201 Division Street, Knoxville, TN 37919 or www.youngwilliams.org. We sure did like his food and his staff. Great guy and we were very sad when he has to close his place on South Central. He once set up a Chef's Table, in his small kitchen, at our request. Our favorite server was Heather. Here it is two years after the fact. I just Googled him to see if he might have opened another restaurant, and was shocked to hear of his death.
