Philip Kienlen Obituary

KIENLEN, PHILIP L. - age 60, of Rockwell, Texas, formerly of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Passed away March 5, 2009. During the years he lived in Oak Ridge, Phil worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Ecclesiastes says that there is nothing new under the sun, but Phil didn't believe that. He was an original thinker who constantly sought new solutions to problems (including running for political office). Phil was energetic and athletic; he played softball and tennis, and for many years he coached youth sports, including his sons' teams. Phil also loved animals, especially German shepherds. Phil is survived by his sons, Andrew and Alexander Kienlen, who live in Heath, Texas. Phil's face always lit up when he talked about Andy and Alex, and he was quick to say that he was a very fortunate man because of his sons. He is also survived by a sister, Sharon Clark; a sister-in-law, Linda Kienlen; three former wives; and seven nieces and nephews. Phil's parents, Kenneth and Hattie Letts Kienlen; brother, Stephen Kienlen; and nephew, Christopher Clark, are no longer living. Memorial services were held in Rockwell, Texas, and in Fort Wayne, Indiana. A guest book is available at Rest Haven Funeral Home www.resthavenfuneral.com, telephone (972)771-8641 in Rockwall, Texas. Phil's death was caused by CADASIL, a hereditary stroke disorder. Phil requested that donations be made to the following research program: Brown University School of Medicine Rhode Island Hospital, c/o Stephen P. Salloway, M.D., Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias Research Program, 593 Eddy St., Providence, RI 02903.

I met Phil when we were both working at Lockheed Martin (then Martin Marietta) in Orlando, FL, during the 1980’s, and we became close friends. Our relationship continued when Phil moved to our facility in Oak Ridge, TN, and later on to Raytheon in Garland, TX.

As tough as this loss is for me, to find the strength to deal with it I have only to look at Phil’s life, which was a tribute to integrity, professionalism, courage, humanity, love, and the sheer joy of living. In death, as in life, his friendship sustains me.

Phil battled a terrible disease with great dignity and courage. He maintained his trademark sense of humor even under his affliction. Through it all, as ever, his first concern was for his two sons. His love for them is boundless and timeless. Alex and Andy, please know that your dad will be with you always.

Phil was my supervisor at work, but he was also my friend. He always spoke about his sons with pride and love. I will miss him deeply.

I was blessed to have Phil as my husband, and felt fortunate to spend ten years with him. He was a good man who loved his two sons deeply; cared for his friends; and enriched each community he lived in by giving generously of his time to coach youth sports. He is terribly missed by those of us who knew him. I hope he is at peace now, and my love for him continues.
