My Mom

She knew what to do when we were burning up with the flu
That was my mom

She never said a word when we used blankets and furniture cushions to make forts, her way of letting us be adventurous
That was my mom

She never said stop when I ran through the house pretending to play sports on
on a cold winter day, her way of letting me burn off energy
That was my mom

She never hesitated to step in when she thought her kids were being threatened injured or taken advantage of
That was my mom

She always made sure we looked presentable all the while enduring our complaints
That was my mom

She said, I'll buy you a suit for your senior prom and never said a word when I chose an outlandish yellow pinstripe model, her way of letting me be an individual
That was my mom

She said, you treat girls poorly and you'll have to answer to me
That was my mom

She trusted me with her credit card when I was just starting out, one of many ways she taught responsibility
That was my mom

There are a lifetime of qualities I could list here, always teaching, only stepping in when she thought you needed help or guidance, helping out in any way possible when any of her children asked for help, even without being asked on many occasions

Then, though she cooked for us all of our lives, I watched her struggle trying to recall a recipe or remember where she put something.

I watched her face turn from a smile to confusion when she couldn't recall the subject we were talking about.

Initially, on some level, I found humor in what was happening. Now, I'm pretty sure it was just my way of acknowledging her issue while knowing, I'll be there someday, as if sharing something that hasn't happened to me yet.

I hoped she never felt frustration with her affliction so I would answer the same questions or share the same comments over and over again as if it was the first time ever said.

I miss you mom
