Steven DeLong Obituary

DELONG, STEVEN CYRIL - age 67, of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away Wednesday morning, August 18, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center-St. Mary's. Steve was born in Norfolk, Virginia, July 3, 1943 to parents, Isabella Grace DeLong and the late Cyril Archer DeLong, of Chesapeake, Virginia. He graduated from Oscar Frommel Smith High School in Norfolk, Virginia and attended the University of Tennessee from 1962-1964. Steve had a very successful career as a football player at UT and in the NFL. Some of his athletic accomplishments included being selected as a two-time All-Southeastern Conference and All-American at Tennessee as a middle guard in 1963 and 1964. He was also winner of the Outland Trophy as the nation's best lineman. After completing his college career, Steve went on to be a first-round draft choice of the American Football League's San Diego Chargers in 1965, where he played for seven seasons before ending his career as a member of the National Football League's Chicago Bears in 1972. In 1987, Steve was inducted into the Hall of Fame of his high school alma mater, Oscar Frommel Smith High in Norfolk, along with his brother, Ken DeLong, former Tennessee lineman Ed Beard, and former UCLA and Seattle Seahawk player Kenny Easley. Delong was also elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993, and most recently honored with his induction into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in January of 2000. Steve spent many years as a resident of Newport, Tennessee where he had a community of friends who loved him well. After a life-changing accident in 2002 he went to reside at Hillcrest Healthcare-North where he developed and an extended family of friends, staff and residents who cared for him and whom he loved dearly. He is loved and survived by his daughter, Stephanie and her husband, Kile Hardesty; son, Keith and wife, Marla DeLong, all of Knoxville, Tennessee; his mother, Grace DeLong, of Chesapeake, Virginia; brother, Kenny and wife, Rene DeLong, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; grandchildren, Ally and Kile Hardesty and Jordan, Griffin and Emmersyn DeLong; and many extended family members. He was always surrounded by so many people who loved and cared for him during his years after his injury. The family will receive friends at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church Chapel on Sunday, July 22, 2010, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. followed by a brief Celebration of Life. Because of their amazing care and assistance during Steve's recovery from his accident the family is requesting in lieu of flowers donations be made to: The Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center C/O Fort Sanders Foundation, 280 Fort Sanders West Blvd., Building 4, Suite 100, Knoxville, TN 37922. Steve Delong was always on the football field for his fellow athletes. I was in Gibbs Hall 1962-1966, and followed Steves football experiences. Then, after I returned from the Marines in VietNam, I went back to UT in 1968 and said to who I thought was Steve was his son (if I recollect). What a great life Steve had. Lonnie Bryan, Gibbs Hall

I first met Steve during spring practice at UT in I believe 1962. Steve was a terrific player, and an outstanding man. I feel honored to have known him.

My condolences to the DeLong family. I visited Knoxville in 1994, for a Tennessee Branch Huguenot meeting. While there, I went to UT's Hall of Fame, but it was closed. Luckily, Steve's section was next to a window. So, I caught a 'glimpse'. A taxi driver I had there knew the DeLong name well, as did someone who moved from Knoxville to Chagrin Falls about a year ago. I know Daddy was proud of successful Oscar Smith "Tigers" he may have influenced as a South Norfolk 'coach'.

Steph and Keith: John I are were very sad to hear about your dad. He was truly a second father to both of us during our parents divorce. He came over to our house, mowed our lawn, took John fishing, took care of anything our mom needed and was always there to help. I will always remember him as big and strong with a wide smile and a "pretty good" golf swing. We all truly loved him!

I had the pleasure of caring for Steve at Hillcrest. He was indeed a "Salty Old Dog" who loved to tell good stories to the staff, residents and visitors of the facility. He will be remembered lovingly by those who knew and loved him. Please know that you will be in our prayers during this difficult time.

Stephanie and Keith,
I met Steve when he was admitted to Patricia Neal Rehab after his accident. I worked in the therapy department and saw and talked with him daily. As a Vol fan, I always enjoyed his stories and the joy that he expressed about being a Vol. He was one of the most enjoyable patients that I met in the 23 years I worked there. I was saddened to hear of his death the other day on the TV, since I had been thinking of him only a day or so before. I will always remember him fondly and pray that you find peace at this time of sorrow.

My sincere sympathies go out to the entire DeLong family. Steve loved his family very much and spoke of them with pride and affection. He was appreciative of the wonderful life that football had afforded him and told many humorous stories of his playing days. He was a very special gentleman who handled his physical challenges and confinement with dignity, all the while staying positive and cheerful. While his inner strength was inspirational, his friendly and kindhearted ways brought joy to many people. We became friends after my aunt moved into the same health care facility where Steve lived. I will miss our visits, his sweet spirit, and his warm and endearing smile. As you celebrate Steve's life, may you find comfort in God's love.

Steve Delong was my favorite vol, growing up in the early '60's. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting him a few months ago while visiting my aunt at a nursing facility in Knoxville. I take pleasure in that 30 minute conversation and cherish the autograph he gave me. My prayers go out to the Delong family.
