KENDALLVILLE - Michael A. Berkey, 79, of Kendallville, Indiana, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.
He was born July 2, 1944, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Frederick Dale and Marcella (Bradtmueller) Berkey.
On June 7, 1969, he married Nancy Neumann.
Michael began his working career as a bricklayer in Fort Wayne. After graduation from Ball State University, he was a math and science teacher at Carroll High School in Fort Wayne. He then joined the family business as a machinist at Berkey Machine in Brimfield and Kendallville. He retired after several years as an assistant manager with the Salvation Army in Fort Wayne and Auburn.
He was a kindhearted, soft-spoken man of very few words. He was also a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.
He was a member of the Salvation Army and St. John Lutheran Church in Kendallville.
Surviving along with his wife, Nancy Berkey, are three children, Michele (Mark) Martinez, of Kendallville, Matt Berkey, of Kendallville and Mark (Sara) Berkey, of Duluth, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Krista (Frank) Hawks, Jordon (Alexia Wallen) Nartker, Julia Berkey, Nicholas Hacha, Lars Berkey and Brianne Berkey; two great-grandchildren, Kruz Gibson and Karsynn Gibson; five siblings, Denny (Elaine) Berkey, of Kendallville, Carol (Mike) Smith, of Angola, Carla (Charles) Gray, of Kendallville, Sally (Thom) Brown, of Racine, Wisconsin, and Brent (Janet) Berkey, of Rome City; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a nephew, William Scott Berkey.
A Celebration of Life open house will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023, at Carol and Mike's house.
