LAGRANGE - Walter W. Shoecraft, 95, of LaGrange, Indiana, died on Monday, April 14, 2025, at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born on Feb. 19, 1930, in Elkhart, Indiana, to Elmer and Vera (Elliott) Shoecraft.
Walt had been a resident of LaGrange and northern Indiana, all his life.
He attended Concord High School and then served in the U.S. Navy at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, from 1947 to 1949.
After the Navy, Walt moved to Elkhart and started his career in the trucking industry, working as a driver and later as a dispatcher. Walt retired in 1995, after 40 years in trucking.
Walt was also a member of LaGrange American Legion Post #215 and in his younger years, Walt was an avid bowler. Most importantly he was a loving husband, father, stepfather and grandfather, and will be remembered always and missed daily.
Walt married Helen (Weber) on April 29, 1977, in LaGrange, Indiana. They would have been married 48 years at the end of April.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Shoecraft; his children, Dreama Porter, Vicki Hiles and C.J. "Blue" (Sally) Shoecraft all of Elkhart; and his stepchildren, Dawn Sites of Florida and Scott Sites, of California. He is also survived by four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Vera (Elliott); his sisters, Beverly Wingard, Judy Hapner and Doris Cripe; and his grandson, Justin Shoecraft.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2025, from 3-5 p.m., at Frurip-May Funeral Home, 309 West Michigan St., LaGrange, IN 46761.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Walt's remembrance may be sent to Cherish Hospice, 1128 E. Winona Ave., Warsaw, IN 46580.
