Donald Murphy Obituary

Donald Lee Murphy Sr., 93, formerly of Troy, Kansas, passed away Monday, August 4, 2025. He spent the sunset of his life at his daughter's home in Norman, Oklahoma, where he was cared for by his daughter, Terry, his son-in-law, Bill, and his granddaughter, Brittany. Donald was born on February 24, 1932, in Troy, Kansas to Elmer and Vida (Sutton) Murphy. Beginning in 1953, he served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany. Following his service, he returned to working as a section lineman for the Chicago Rock Island Railroad and later the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for a total of 42 years. While working for the railroad, he was assigned to several locations. He was located in Dalhart, TX for a short time where the newlyweds added their first born, Mary Ann. They moved to Des Moines, IA, where Terry Lynn and Donald Jr joined the family. The family would then move to Atlantic, IA where William joined the family. Atlantic would remain their home until one last move took them to Jamesport, MO, which became their home after retiring. A few years after Mary Agnes passed, he returned to Atlantic for a short time. He then relocated to Norman, OK, where he remained until passing. Donald loved spending time with his grandchildren. His grandchildren and great grandchildren spent many summers keeping him company during their school breaks. Donald was not one to remain idle. During his time of employment, he rarely took a sick day. After his retirement you could find him out in his shed or working on an item on Mary's "honey do list." His skill and knowledge of electricity was utilized many times by family and friends. While in Oklahoma, he was blessed to spend his days @ Full Circle where he socialized, exercised and experienced great joy. Donald was well traveled. He went on many trips with his kids and grandchildren; creating memories that will forever be held in their hearts. Donald married Mary Agnes Smith on March 14, 1959, in Savannah, Missouri. She preceded him in death on July 24, 2012. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Gloria "Polly" Moppin and Darrel "Buck" Murphy Sr., cousin, Jody Sutton (whom his parents raised and Donald considered his brother), and son-in-law, Mike McConnell. Survivors include his daughters, Mary Ann McConnell and Terry Murphy (and spouse), sons, Donald Lee Murphy Jr. (and spouse) and William Marvin Murphy, 20 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren with one on the way, 2 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was greatly loved, and his light is deeply missed. Funeral Service: 1:00 P.M. Sunday, August 17, 2025. At the Harman-Rohde Funeral Home in Troy, Kansas. Visitation: 7-9 P.M. Saturday, August 16, 2025, at the funeral home. Friends may call after 12 noon Saturday. Burial: Fanning Cemetery, Fanning, Kansas.
