Dr. George Franklin Fischer DVM

A Life of Service: George Franklin Fischer, DVM (1927-2025) A pillar of his community and a dedicated servant to his nation, George Fischer, DVM, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2025, in Saint Joseph, MO, at the remarkable age of 97. Born to Carl and Edith Fischer on August 18, 1927, in Garden City, MO, George lived a life marked by commitment, leadership, and a deep care for others. On July 31, 1949, George married Doris (Schollmeyer) Fischer, and together they built a loving family with daughter Carla and son Carl. Colonel Fischer's distinguished career in the U.S. Army spanned decades and took him across five continents. From Texas (San Antonio, Houston, Camp Wolters) and Illinois (Chicago) to Pennsylvania (Philadelphia), Kansas (Ft. Leavenworth), Panama, and Germany, he served his country with honor. His year commanding the 144th Veterinary Corps in Vietnam showcased his leadership and dedication, earning him numerous accolades including the Vietnam Service Medal with 4 stars, the Defense Meritorious Service Superior Medal, and the Bronze Star. A dedicated member of the Masonic fraternity for 75 years, George was a 33rd Degree Mason of Index # 54 AF & AM. He was also an active member of the Scottish Rite, York Rite, and the Shriner Moila Temple. Following his father's path, George earned his doctorate from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in 1954. He was proud to be a "vet" both as a military veteran and as a veterinarian. In recognition of his significant contributions to the veterinary profession, George was honored as the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association Veterinarian of the Year and Missourian of the Year in 2007. Demonstrating his lasting commitment to the field and support for future generations of veterinarians, he established The Carl and George Fischer Scholarship Fund for the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. George was deeply engaged in his local community, serving on the Dekalb County road commission and on the ACCD 911 District since 1992, including multiple terms as Chairman. Known for his warm spirit and unwavering dedication, George was a cherished friend and considered family by many. He will be lovingly remembered as a dear friend, devoted husband, father, and grandfather who dedicated his life to serving others. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Doris, and his sisters, Lucy and Ann. George is survived by his daughter, Carla (Stephen) Stevens; his son, Carl Fredrick (Christine) Fischer; and his five grandchildren: Webb (Meredith) Stevens, Gene (Courtney) Stevens, Carly (Ramsey) Stevens, Paul (Jessica) Fischer, and Rosemary Fischer; his great-granddaughter, Ava Stevens; and his three nephews: Steven (Laura) Shifflett, Carl (Mary) Fugate, and Mike (Bonnie) Fugate. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 25, 2025, at Faith United Church, Saint Joseph, with inurnment to follow at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 24th at Turner Funeral Home, Maysville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the University of Missouri Veterinary College Fischer Scholarship Fund, Faith United Church Building Fund, or a charity of your choice.
