Verna Young Obituary

Verna Wilma Carol (Rebel) Young was born in Corning, MO on April 27, 1933. She was one of eight children born to Hinrich and Emma (Gerdes) Rebel. She married the love of her life, Eddie Young, on April 5, 1953. After spending two years in Japan with Eddie while he served in the Navy, they returned to Mound City to farm and raise their family of four children. Verna loved to sew and was known as an accomplished seamstress. She could create anything. She made matching outfits for her kids, quilts, dresses, and wedding dresses for Jan and Amy. She could design and fashion her own patterns. She especially enjoyed making quilts and bags from denim jeans for each of her grandchildren. Her heart was most clearly seen through a full table-both people and food gathered together. Whether it was neighbors, family or soon-to-be friends, she was ready to serve and make you feel instantly at home. Her specialties were waffles, tacos, and cookies (especially Eddie's favorite-snickerdoodles). The food was always flavorful, but the real filling took place in the souls of her guests. She was a devoted wife and mother. Verna absolutely adored her 10 grandchildren and 27 great grandkids. They were the joy of her life. Verna passed away at Fairfax Community Hospital in Fairfax while surrounded by her family to reunite with Eddie on June 22, 2025 at the age of 92. Verna was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Harvey, Fritz, and Jay; sisters, Viona Scarbrough, infant twins Ida and Edith Rebel, and Emilie Boswell; her husband of nearly 72 years; and great granddaughter, Sadie Young. She is survived by their children, Byron (Jan) Young of Aledo, TX, Steve (Kristy) Young of Kingsville, MO, Roger (Michele) Young of Lee's Summit, MO, and Amy Young of Mound City; grandchildren, Brooke (Steve) Gomba, Mark (Whitney) Young, Mary (Alan) Findley, Jason Rogers, Jared (Rochelle) Rogers, Kaleb (Samantha) Young, Kevin (Brittney) Young, Jacob ( Kristen) Rogers, Ashley Vann, and Sara (Braden) Voss; great grandchildren, Aaron, Aidan, Adam, Michael, Thea, Adlee, Anders, Kami, Remington, Kimber, Chandler, Madeleine, Ezekiel, Titus, Silas, Addison, Judah, Gavin, Miles, Ayla, Lana, Sloane, Clarke, Darian, Adri, Scottie Kaye, and Lennon Kaye; and nieces and nephews. Family visitation: Friday, June 27, 2025, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, River of Hope Fellowship. Funeral services: Saturday, June 28, 2025, 10:30 am, River of Hope Fellowship. Interment: Mount Hope Cemetery.
