Barry Holst Obituary

VINTON: Barry Leonard Holst, 58, died Saturday, July 19, 2025, at University Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City from complications of injuries suffered in an automobile accident on July 4th. A visitation will be held from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 29, 2025. At the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 E. 6th Street) in Vinton. A memorial service will follow at 6:00 PM, also at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the family. Barry was born March 25, 1967, to Leonard and Doris (Rath) Holst and graduated from Washington High School in Vinton with the class of 1985. Barry worked at Schoonover Tuckpointing, Thiessen's, Frontier and Black Machine throughout his life. Barry was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed spending time with his family, mushroom hunting, deer hunting, and working around the farm. Anyone that got along with him knew he would do most anything for his friends and family. He was known in the neighborhood for having the loudest speakers around and enjoying his rock music, specifically Ozzy Osbourne and Metallica. He is survived by his son Logan Holst; mother, Doris M. Holst; sister Yvette (Frank) Baker; brother-in-law Rick Zimpfer; life partner, Karen Ackman; nephews, Shelby (Ashley) Baker, Thad (Sarah Peterson) Dulin, all of Vinton, and Jared (Janette) Baker of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard; sister Yvonne Zimpfer, and infant brother, David.
