Harold Begemann was born September 22, 1932, on the family farm south of Charles City to Christoph and Erma (Stock) Begemann. He attended Riverton Township Country School through 8th grade and graduated from Charles City High School in 1951. Active in baseball during high school, his senior year the team earned a trip to the State Baseball Tournament finishing second place. Harold was also involved actively as an FFA member, serving as a state officer-Vice President.
Harold met Shirley Albertson at the Riviera Ballroom in Janesville, Iowa. He saw a pretty girl across the room and asked her to dance. They were married July 23, 1960, in Waterloo, Iowa. In 2010 the couple celebrated their 50th Anniversary with family and friends. Harold was a life-long farmer (with Shirley by his side) raising livestock and crops until he retired and moved into Charles City. He would still help his boys on the family farm after his retirement.
Harold was a life-long member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. He was also a member for many years of Floyd County Cattleman, Pork Producers, Farm Bureau and the Nashua Town and Country Club (golfing with his wife Shirley and on Men's League).
Harold enjoyed bowling, golfing, cheering on the Chicago Cubs, playing cards and supporting both the Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones. He especially loved watching the grandkids in all of their extracurricular activities, spending time with his family and driving out to the country to look at the crops.
Living family members include his sons: Craig (Julie) Begemann and Denny (Kim) Begemann all of Charles City; grandchildren: Lindsey Begemann, Alexandra (Chris) Kerber, Lauren (Caleb) Lundberg and Ryan Begemann; step-grandchildren: Chelsy Fenneman and Cole Chambers; great-grandchildren: Carson Mullenbach, Madison Mullenbach, Evan Kerber, Drew Kerber, Kenzie Lundberg and Brecklyn Lundberg; along with many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
