Mark Wessling Obituary

Mark Wessling, 78, of Watkins, passed away Saturday, July 19, 2025, at UI Healthcare Medical Center, Iowa City. Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 1, 2025, at St. Patrick and St. Paul Cemetery, Watkins. Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home is caring for Mark and his family. Mark was born September 24, 1946, in rural Benton County, the son of Joseph and Lillian (Kimm) Wessling. He attended school in Vinton. Mark worked construction for various companies prior to joining the staff at Benton County Landfill, where he retired in 1995. In his leisure time, Mark loved to shoot pool, repair cars, garden, and collect gnomes and bobbleheads. Mark is survived by six nieces and nephews: Catherine Adams of Iowa City, Louise Lazenby of Vinton, Carol McNeal of South Carolina, Don (Karen) McNeal of Mt. Auburn, Rick Wessling of Minneapolis, MN, and Becky (Dan) Staedtler of Ames; sister-in-law, Marge Wessling of Vinton; and several great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph Wessling; and sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann (Raymond) McNeal. A memorial fund has been established.
