Richard Merfeld Obituary

Richard Earl Merfeld, 78, of Tama, passed away Friday, June 27, 2025 at Iowa River Hospice Home in Marshalltown. A Memorial Graveside Service will be held Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Richard was born on January 5, 1947, in Monticello, Iowa, the son of Lester and Elizabeth (Redmond) Merfeld. He attended Catholic school in Monticello. Richard served his country in the U.S. Army in Germany for two years during the Vietnam War. On March 14, 1970, he was united in marriage to Sandra Capron at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Anamosa, Iowa. Richard worked for over twenty years for Barron Motor Supply in Toledo. He then worked at the Tama County Shop as the Parts Manager for twenty-five years. After retirement, he and Sandy enjoyed bidding on storage unit sheds and resold the contents at his garage sales. Richard was family oriented and enjoyed spending time with them. His grandchildren always kept him busy. Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Sandy; his favorite daughters, Dawn Walker (Joe Witte) and Stacy Merfeld (Tim Kasal); grandchildren, Trent Walker (Cheyenne Vanzee), Kenzee (Quinten) Charlier, Marckus (Makayla) Merfeld, and Megan Witte; great-grandchildren, Paxton, Melanie, Brystol, Avery, Margot, Beckham, Mary Ann, Knox, and Milo; sisters, Louise (Ed) Harn, Nancy ( Larry) Meier, and Barbara (Mark) Embree; sisters-in-law, Marge (William) Eilers, Elverna (Gary) Hoffman; brother-in-law, John (Wendy) Capron; along with several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother, Jerry Merfeld; sister, Mary Baker; and in-laws, Elvern and Marie Capron. Memorials may be directed to Iowa River Hospice in Marshalltown.
