Derek Jones Obituary

December 14, 1967 - June 13, 2025 Derek Pierson Jones of Spokane, Washington, transcended this life June 13th, 2025, at the age of 57. He was an expert mountaineer, a million-vertical-feet skier, a surfer, a wild wit and a poet. Home, for Derek, was without border (Spokane, Paris, Brooklyn, Seattle, New Mexico, Oregon, the mountains, the ocean and the open road). At sixteen, Derek set off on a bike trek down the western coast of the United States with his lifelong friend Tim. The great outdoors was his honored sanctuary and his playground. He could live on a dime and didn't need much more than a bike, a composition notebook, and family. For him family wasn't just blood, but the people he chose along the way. A gifted writer and philosopher, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Washington in 1996, studied Liberal Arts at Seattle Central Community College in 1988, and Cours de Civilization et Langues Francais at La Sorbonne in Paris, France in 1990. Derek was an intuitive thinker and seeker of truth, and with that came an overwhelming compassion for the sake of the world around him. He felt everything fiercely and ferociously. Derek knew the fight he was up against with addiction and found strength, community and purpose as a member of Alcoholics Anonymous throughout most of his life. His quick wit and humor brought a welcome levity when times were just about too much to bear. Derek was a tough and tender listener. He had the uncanny ability to read people straight through to the core, to transcend the bullshit, and do it eloquently. That was Derek. His energy and welcoming smile were things we can remember. A friend wrote, "when he was clear, he was like the sun." He is survived by his son, Griffin Bengochea, sisters Bryn Nakamura and Sarah Farley, and brother, David Jones. Missed dearly by nieces, nephews, and adventure buddies. Immediate family will celebrate Derek privately, returning his and his mother's ashes back home to eastern Oregon. In his memory, donations may be made to Alcoholics Anonymous or organizations supporting mental health and addiction recovery. Or just get out on a bike zero emissions!

Wild spirit..to the river to the mountain top, on foot, on cycle, breaking into a campground at Cannon Beach as Teens.every April for years...freezing, the three of us..then the glorious sea..picking shells that had floated from Japan..scattered....hot coffee, books, a warm sweater, jokes, a fire..friends, trees, sky, water, swimming, music, books, the earth, the sky, the city was never your friend never..but I was ..and I am grateful for our fights, our friendship, our good times and life times. You never published a single word - you could have lived off those words but didn't..held close to your heart..then a yard sale and everything given away. I don't have any of the books you gave me..cause I lost them on the road or gave them away. I have memories. Our last time as friends was in hugs and laughter..my favorite times was us swimming and cycling..our human times was being flawed humans in humour. Not many could actually make me laugh or smile but you did. Like a sweet wind I always wished I could heal your sensitive heart..the mountains did that..the sea did that, the stars did that, love did that, laughter did that..animals did that. Love Cavey( You started calling me that when I was 18 cause I looked like Captain Cave Man) when waking up when group camping. Love you. I still feel you in my heart. For now and forever and next time cause there will be a next time-there are to many memories to post but these stand out for now. A lot of people called us Abbott and Costello when we were together.. I will most miss that part of our friendship.

I met Derek through my younger brother Aaron. I saw him almost every week on the community bike ride. My deepest condolences. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts during this difficult time.

Danger and I volunteered together at the bike swap a few years back. We bonded on many levels. I was saddened to learn of his passing but I am grateful that our paths crossed.
