SAMUEL PERINGER Obituary
Samuel Philip Peringer, 84, passed away October 5th, 2025, in Oakesdale, WA. Sam was born in 1941 in Spokane, WA to George E. Peringer and Dorothy Norton Peringer. He was the oldest of three children, followed by Rodney "Butch" Peringer and Paul Peringer. Sam was raised on the multi-generational farm that has been in the family since 1908 near Belmont, WA and graduated from Oakesdale High School in 1959.
Sam was most often described as a "one of a kind" personality. He was a true independent thinker with deep thoughts and convictions. Sam was a man of strong principles with incredible integrity and lived his life as a humble servant. Faith and family were important to him and farming was his purpose in life.
He was drafted into the US Army in 1963 and sent to Saigon, Vietnam with the primary role of Military Police Corps - Military Police Officer. Sam met Barbara Schmitz the summer of 1964 at the farm of Wilbur and Ruth Wilhelm. Much of their courtship was through letters written during his military service. He came home from Vietnam in 1965 and was literally "swept off his feet" by Barbara at the airport. He proposed that same year on Steptoe Butte and they married in October of 1966 in Fairfield, WA.
Sam and Barbara spent their lives working together as a resilient and steadfast team, farming, and raising their three children. Sam loved the challenge of growing quality crops while preserving the land for future generations with his soil conservation practices. Sam was also a self-taught machinist. His scientific mind loved discovery and inventions. He enjoyed teaching his skills and sharing his knowledge. He was an avid reader – history, technical manuals, and anything mechanical, especially having to do with tractors and airplanes.
He was a member of the Oakesdale Presbyterian Church for 75 years serving in many leadership roles. He also served on the Oakesdale Cemetery Board as one of the first board members. Sam was instrumental in installing the new water system and planting the colorful maple trees that you see today.
Sam was a respected member of the community. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. We will deeply miss the patient, caring, and compassionate patriarch of our family.
Sam is survived by his wife Barbara of almost 59 years, as well as his three children; Jill (Tim) Hanson (Spokane Valley, WA); Tom Peringer (Belmont, WA); Molly Peringer (Spokane, WA). He is also survived by his three grandchildren; Erin (Troy) Taylor (Spokane, WA); Elyssa (Cole) Hanson (Poulsbo, WA); Evan (Alyssa) Hanson (Spokane Valley, WA); his brother Paul (Barbara) Peringer (Garfield, WA); along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
