Mary Wheatley Obituary

Mary Gladys Wheatley, 101, passed away peacefully at her home on October 28, 2021. She was born on Aug. 28, 1920, in Nelson County to the late Samuel and Anna Prudence Lyvers. Gladys grew up in Nelson County and attended the Old Sutherland School. She was a proud graduate of Bethlehem High School, class of 1940. She was the oldest alumni member of Bethlehem High School.
Gladys married Leon Wheatley in 1942 at St. Thomas Church and moved to Washington County, where she lived the rest of her life. Together, they raised a large family on the Cartwright Creek Farm. After her husband passed away in 1977, she managed the family farm with her two sons. Gladys was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She leaves with all of them many cherished memories.
Gladys was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Rose Church. She was also a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Wheatley; their daughter, Mary Alicia; her sisters, Angela (T.J.) Brussell and Daisy (George) Peters; her brothers, Jay (Ruby) Lyvers, Junior (Betty) Lyvers, and Marvin Lyvers; and her sons-in-law, John Minor, Jim Mattingly, Bradley Arms and Tony Spalding; and a grandson, Shane Minor.
Gladys is survived by her 10 children; Leon (Betty) Wheatley Jr., Angela Minor, Theresa Mattingly, Joseph (Sharon) Wheatley, Samuel (Lee) Wheatley, Susie (Billy) Fryer, Elaine Arms, Mark (Debbie) Wheatley, Alice Spalding, and Johnny (Lisa) Wheatley; 27 grandchildren; and 48 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Leona Lyvers, of Bardstown.
The Funeral Mass was 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, at St. Rose Catholic Church. Burial was in the St. Rose Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy may go to the Legacy Fund of St. Rose.
Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
