Arthur Zeller Gronning
August 14, 1929 - October 18, 2025
First and foremost, Art was the dedicated, loving, and kind husband of his wife Dorothy for 70 years. Art and Dorothy (Nemec) were married on June 4, 1955, at Salem Ridge Methodist Church, LaFarge, WI. They had two children, DuWayne and Sue.
Art was born, raised, and farmed the Century plus Gronning Farm on County Road B, Jefferson Township, Vernon County, WI. His parents were Arthur and Lydia (Zeller) Gronning.
Art was an active farmer and lifetime member of the Guernsey Club (National Honor Roll, Purebred Dairy Cattle Association). He was also an honorary member of the Wisconsin Feeder Pig Co-op, Francis Creek, WI, for selling from 300-500+ forty-pound feeder pigs from 1968-1982. Later, Art raised a herd of Angus cattle and tended his neatly contoured farmland.
His service to the community included: 4-H Club Woodworking Leader, two terms as Jefferson Township Chairman, two terms as President of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where he also worked annually at the church food stand at the fair. (In fact, he brought his RV to park behind the stand so that workers could take breaks as needed). He drove school bus, sports and field trips for the Viroqua Area School District for decades. Art was a longtime board member of the VARC Board.
Activities Art especially enjoyed included being third baseman for a Westby team, dancing with his wife, carving with his grandson, obtaining his pilot's license, and rv-ing with family and friends on trips throughout the United States.
Art was preceded in death by son, DuWayne; grandson, Lucas Running; four sisters and their spouses, Blanche and Morris Meunier, Doris and LeRoy Hanson, Eunice and Bob Oertli, and Janet and Bill Rogers. Also, brothers-in-law, Bud Nemec and Ole Yttri.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Sue and Mark Running and their family, Matthew, Adam and Kristel and their children, Alara, Evalene and Keyton; Katelyn and Josh and their children, Leo, Rocky and Cora; his daughter-in-law, Linzi (DuWayne) and their family, Skyler, Trevor, and Chelsea.
Art enjoyed his wife's nieces and nephews. He was especially close to the families of his sisters. In fact, they met yearly for family reunion picnics including July 2025.
As per request there will be no visitation or funeral. A private burial at Bethel Cemetery, County Road B, will be held at a later date. Online condolences can made at
