David G. Monroe
La CRESCENT, MN - David G. Monroe, 77, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.
Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to David and Helen (Paquette) Monroe, he graduated from Loretto Catholic Central High School in 1965 where he participated in football and hockey.
After high school, Dave enlisted in the United States Navy to serve his country earning his wings as a helicopter crew chief. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran. He married Mary Jo Langer in 1968 and they had two boys, Robert and Thomas; they later divorced.
Dad was a brilliant engineer, with degrees from Michigan Tech University (Civil) and Lake Superior State University (Mechanical). He was a member of the Michigan Tech University Vets Club and loved those men dearly. Dave had a long career in construction management, the most impactful was with Clark Construction in Lansing, Michigan. He truly loved what he did and was touched by the many calls he received after his retirement. He famously enjoyed telling work stories and explaining structural steel and thermodynamics to us. There he met and later married Laura Ervin, her two boys Bryan and Patrick becoming family. Dave and Laura were married for 20 years until her passing in 2015.
Dad absolutely loved "being a hockey player" and coaching. He coached for many years, it was part of him, if there was a hockey game on, he was watching it. He loved fishing with his boys and being on the water- those were some of his best memories. Dad was extremely proud of his family, all his boys and his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura; parents: David and Helen; and brother, James.
He will be missed by his sons: Robert (Sara) Monroe, Thomas (Elise) Monroe; stepsons: Bryan (Jessica) Ervin, Patrick Ervin; and sister, Patricia Monberg. Memories of his love will be enjoyed by his grandchildren: Taylor Monroe, Braedon Monroe, Haley Ervin, Alexis Ervin and very special nephew and niece: Billy Monberg and Katherine Monberg. Special friends Peter Campbell, Bob and Karen Ziemnick, and Richard Rozman. His little schnauzer Angel will miss him dearly.
A special thank you to Mary Jo Monroe for spending each afternoon with dad for nearly two years, keeping him company and taking care of him. Thank you to the staff at Springbrook Village of La Crescent, MN for their care and kindness to our family and Aubrey at Moments Hospice for your constant contact.
A private interment will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Lansing, Michigan.
