Douglas O. Hussa
MAQUOKETA, IA - Douglas Oscar Hussa, "Dugie" 67, of Maquoketa, Iowa, died from a 3-year battle with prostate cancer on Tuesday April 2, 2024. He passed peacefully at his home surrounded by family with his wife Eda and sister Ann providing hospice care. Doug was born on August 5, 1956 in La Crosse, WI to Oscar and Eleanor (Jones) Hussa. Doug graduated from Bangor High School in 1974.
While growing up, Doug enjoyed the many trips taken by the family traveling throughout the United States. Colorado was one of his favorite places to visit. He enjoyed camping, hiking, skiing, climbing in the mountains and racing his siblings to the top of Pikes Peak. Doug was active in the Bangor High School sports, he loved football, basketball, and excelled at track. He worked at his father's hardware store, taught swimming and life guarded at the West Salem, WI pool. Doug will be remembered for teaching many a brave soul to water ski at Lake Neshonoc. Doug enjoyed participating in the La Crosse River Water Ski Club.
After attending UW-LaCrosse he transferred to Western Wisconsin Technical Institute and received an associate degree in Marketing.
Doug met and married Julia Asturias while living in La Crosse, WI. They moved to Milwaukee, WI and went on to have two children, Joshua and Erika. They moved to Guatemala where Doug became fluent in Spanish. He worked as an agent for the Dept of Drug Enforcement Administration and was involved in several large illegal drug shipment confiscations.
Doug returned to the US after 15 years in Guatemala. He worked as a district manager at American Building Maintenance in Maquoketa, IA and retired in 2021. After retirement he tutored English at the Presentation Lantern Center in Dubuque, IA.
In November 2021, Doug married Eda Estrada and adopted her daughter Jalilee.
Doug faithfully followed the Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers and Bangor High School sports no matter where he lived. He was a very personable soul, wanting to know the names of the nurses and other caregivers assisting him.
Doug was preceded in death by his brother Kenneth, mother Eleanor, and father Oscar.
Doug is survived by his wife, Eda; former wife and mother of his children, Julia Asturias, of Guatemala City, Guatemala; children Joshua Hussa and Erika Hussa of Houston, TX, and stepdaughter Jalilee, of Guatemala. Siblings Dean Hussa, of LaCrosse, WI; Kay (Mark) Kastenschmidt, of Bangor, WI; Paul Hussa, of Golden Valley, MN; Ann Hussa, of Northfield, MN; niece Kasey Kastenschmidt, of Plymouth, MN; and longtime friends Dave and Shawn Vazquez, of Maquoketa, IA.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday June 1st from 2pm until 6pm at Augie's in Bangor, WI. A memorial tree in his honor will be planted at a later date. We invite you all to share pictures and memories of our "Dugie". We love and miss ya brother!
