When the cast finally was reassembled for "Star Trek - The Motion Picture," in 1979, the film was a huge hit and five sequels followed. Nimoy appeared in all of them and directed two. He also guest starred as an older version of himself in some of the episodes of the show's spinoff TV series, "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

"Of course the role changed my career- or rather, gave me one," he once said. "It made me wealthy by most standards and opened up vast opportunities. It also affected me personally, socially, psychologically, emotionally. ... What started out as a welcome job to a hungry actor has become a constant and ongoing influence in my thinking and lifestyle."

In 2009, he was back in a new big-screen version of "Star Trek," this time playing an older Spock who meets his younger self, played by Zachary Quinto. Critic Roger Ebert called the older Spock "the most human character in the film."

Among those seeing the film was President Barack Obama, whose even manner was often likened to Spock's.

"Everybody was saying I was Spock, so I figured I should check it out," Obama said at the time.

Upon the movie's debut, Nimoy told The Associated Press that in his late 70s he was probably closer than ever to being as comfortable with himself as the logical Spock always appeared to be.

"I know where I'm going, and I know where I've been," he said. He reprised the role in the 2013 sequel "Star Trek Into Darkness."

Born in Boston to Jewish immigrants from Russia, Nimoy was raised in an Italian section of the city where, although he counted many Italian-Americans as his friends, he said he also felt the sting of anti-Semitism growing up.

At age 17 he was cast in a local production of Clifford Odets' "Awake and Sing" as the son in a Jewish family.

"This role, the young man surrounded by a hostile and repressive environment, so touched a responsive chord that I decided to make a career of acting," he said later.

He won a drama scholarship to Boston College but eventually dropped out, moved to California and took acting lessons at the Pasadena Playhouse.

Soon he had lost his "Boston dead-end" accent, hired an agent and began getting small roles in TV series and movies. He played a baseball player in "Rhubarb" and an Indian in "Old Overland Trail."

After service in the Army, he returned to Hollywood, working as taxi driver, vacuum cleaner salesman, movie theater usher and other jobs while looking for acting roles.

In 1954 he married Sandra Zober, a fellow student at the Pasadena Playhouse, and they had two children, Julie and Adam. The couple divorced, and in 1988 he married Susan Bay, a film production executive.

Oh Mr. ("I Am Not Spock") Nimoy....oh yes you are and I´m late with my condolences but so heartfelt nonetheless. What an elegant actor and director! One of my very favorite movies is Star Trek IV The Voyage Home, or the Greenpeace movie as so many like to call it. What a delightful premise for the story and the whole running theme of "colorful metaphors" was delicious. "Are you sure it´s not the time for a colorful metaphor?" And "they are not the hell your whales!" I love it all. Thank you for everything and much love to your family.

Now that you are not physically the memories build a path that reaches the heart and makes me see clearly how much you meant in my life and in everyone who felt identified with you through Spock, a unique being that frames our life since childhood. He taught us how to get by living between two worlds and not belonging totally to any.
And to say of Leonard, the kind, good, compassionate, wise, joyful man that you will live eternally in every heart that I love and love you.

"I am saddened that the world has lost a brilliant dedicated person (Mr. Nimoy). He did so many notable things in his life and had an impact on so many people. I am proud to say that he made an impact on mine. I had joined the U.S. Army and became a CID Special Agent several years after watching the original Star Trek series, but it was his calm emotionless appearance as Mr. Spoke that helped mold me so that I could interrogate suspects and conduct countless interviews efficiently. During interviews on t.v. with Mr. Nimoy, I was honored to see the real sides of him. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a great smile. I consider Mr. Nimoy to be a friend and sincerely know that the world is a better place because of his contributions."

In the 70s I worked at a Milwaukee TV station and one of our live shows was a noon time talk show. Mr. Nimoy was appearing in town twice within a 3 month period and was booked on the show. The second time he escorted himself into the studio and I had his attention just the 2 of us for a while. He was gracious enough to act as if he remembered me and he patiently answered all my dorky Star Trek questions. Such a nice man. He is indeed living long and prospering.

When I was a kid, my father (who died on June 9, 2014 from lung and esophageal cancers at age 83) got me interested in his non-Spock stuff, like In Search Of... and Standby...Lights, Camera, Action; he wanted me to love him for the real person that he was *first*, and *then* Spock; it's only "logical" He had the best of both worlds: He was good-looking *and* intelligent!

I sometimes have dreams about him, which proves that he goes on, like it says in the song, "My Heart Will Go on" from Titanic.

He and my dad were not very far apart in age. My dad was born February 23, 1931, and Mr. Nimoy was born March 26, 1931. I only wish I'd known about his Facebook site earlier so I could have told him what he meant to me and my family, but that's just how it goes, sometimes: too little, too late! My condolences to his family

February 27, 2016

Your memory lives on in watching the reruns of Star Trek. God 's thoughts gives us true comfort. Hebrews 2:15 gives us freedom from a morbid fear of death. How encouraging!

November 25, 2015

As a student at East Tennessee State in 1979 I attended a conference that Mr. Nimoy spoke his topic Spock and I. He spoke of Gene Roddenberry vision of a World united. The struggles of the show to deal with the issues of the time. His own character half human and half Vulcan and his own private struggle on the show and in person that all of us seek to know what and who we are. He was a pioneer of his time and will surely be missed. His character had great influence on my own career as an Army officer in dealing with people fairly from other lands without biased.

May 14, 2015

I spent six hours staring at my Enterprise wallpaper on my PC, lost in thoughts and tears, after I heard. Then I remembered... Spock was about logic, and common sense, and about getting things done without emotional turmoil. So I got busy, and finished the days tasks, before a good evening playing Star Trek Online. I knew Spock wouldn't have moped. He carried on toward the future, and his goals, never dwelling on the past! If I had moped and wept any longer, what kind of Trekkie would I be? what kind of Spock fan? What kind of Leonard Nimoy fan??? If you dwell on the past, you likely won't live long, and you likely won't prosper. Trek, and especially Spock, changed my life for the better. My memorial to him shall be my continuing efforts to better myself, and my friends, family, and world. My memorial to him will be to live long, and prosper... Just as he hoped every soul would.

To all closest to Mr. Nimoy,

my deepest condolences from Finland, I hope you are doing well.

I was 9-10 years old when I saw my first episode of Star Trek, in around 1985 etc. The moment I saw "Mr Spock" I was in awe. I asked my mom if I was allowed to watch the show and got a "yes" :). I watched every episode I could. Got them on video, too. Swore that one day I would understand everything Spock / Nimoy says and, from that moment on, learning English was a piece of cake for me :).

At 38 years old I am now at a point where I consider myself fluent in English. I wouldn't be where I am now without Mr. Nimoy's inspiration.

I did not know him personally, but since age 9-10, he has always been a part of my life, a big part. I joined Twitter on February 2015. He was the first one I followed. Too late -would have loved to tell him what an inspiration he was to many, many people.

But I guess he already knows it ;)

He's not gone, he's not forgotten. He is a soul who inspired many. Probably millions :)

Rest in Peace Leonard "MR Spock" Nimoy. Years ago, while living in Dorchester, on Harwood Street, we had a great barber located on Blue Hill Avenue, near Morton Street. His name? Max Nimoy with his partner, Max Platter. At that time I wasn't a Star Trek Fan but am one now- for several years. All over the walls of the barbershop were 8" x 10" black & white photos of Leonard. Leonard & I & William Shatner share something in common, in that the three of us were born in March of 1931--another co-incidence! I will be observing my 84th birthday on Monday,March 9th! Hopefully, the accompanying photo will show my Wife,Li, our Daughter, Remy Li & Me. Rest in peace & prosper, in heaven, Mr Spock. You will never be forgotten!
