Thomas "Tom" McGowen, Jr., of Fresno, CA, was born on April 7, 1939 in Stevinson, CA to Thomas McGowen, Sr. and Allie (Faddis) McGowen and passed away peacefully on the morning of Monday, December 15, 2014, at the age of 75.
As the eighth and youngest child in his family, Tom idolized his older siblings and proudly watched his five brothers return home from World War II. He had fond memories of growing up in Merced County, and he joined the Marine Corps upon graduating from Livingston High School.
Over the next few decades, Tom lived all over California and his professional endeavors ranged from freelance photography to a 20-year stint with Bank of America. He met his wife Sue in the mid-70's, and they eventually settled in Fresno where he fulfilled his dream of opening his own business, Tomahawk Freight Company. More recently, Tom was excited about the opportunity to lend a hand on his brother-in-law's ranch in Gustine, CA.
Tom never met a stranger, always had a story to share, and was always game for an adventure or road trip. He had a heart of gold, and his generosity knew no bounds. He loved his family above all else and was immensely proud of his two daughters and his 4 year old grandson. Anyone who knew Tom appreciated his vibrant personality and his unique set of hobbies and interests. He was a triathlete, an American history buff, a recreational pilot, a gifted photographer, and he spent his 30's as an amateur heavyweight boxer. He was also extremely passionate about the many cars, trucks, and motorcycles he amassed over the years. Tom was a rare soul, and he will be greatly missed.
Tom was his parents' last surviving child, and was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers and sisters.
Tom is survived by his wife, Sue; daughters, Leslie and Shannon; grandson, Dakota; and his in-laws, Richard and Marjorie Rasmussen. Tom is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, brother-in-laws, and sister-in-laws.

Our family will miss Tom. He was always the life of the party at family gatherings. He had the best stories to tell, and his laugh was infectious. So glad that Mike got to talk to him just the week before he passed. Rest in Peace Tom.

Tom was a very unique person. Just had the pleasure of running into him just a few weeks ago and had a great visit and reminisce about old times on "McGowen Circle" as we used to call it. He will be missed.

My heart is so sad. After many years, I recently had contact with Tom. He took me and my sisters to dinner and we had a wonderful time. That was on Dec. 5th and I called him the next week to thank him again. He was driving and said he would call me back. I never got that call. Tom was a wonderful guy, I'll never forget him. My sincere condolences to his wife and daughters. He talked about his daughters with great love. And also, how is Twinkie doing without him? He had such love for that little doggie!!

Tom was an old and dear friend. I'll never forget the time we ran into the Manson clan in Death Valley in 1969 at the Barker Ranch. Here is a photo from that eventful motorcycle trip. Tom, his brother (Ray, I think) and myself (in the middle.)
