I was so sorry to learn of Hastings' death. I was a classmate at Hume School, Arlington, Virginia, in the third through sixth grades, where he was the object of crushes by all the little girls because he was handsome and kind. (I am sure that this is the Hastings I knew so long ago.) My sincerest condolences to his family on their loss of a wonderful person.

Overdue condolences to Carol and the family. Met Shive in my organic chemistry class in 1960 at U of H in Hartford. He went to med school I to vet med school a few years later. We went separate ways, but I always remember his easy going yet hard working ways.

Shive and I were neighbors in Terra Linda and I would catch his pitches from one end of the street to the other. His children and mine played together.
He lived an exemplary life and I am so sorry he has passed away. My condolences to his family.

Mrs. Shively, very sorry for your loss. Harold and I shared a common bond in Wesleyan Baseball. I am heading down to SD to see the Padres play and thought to look him up. Very sorry to see what I found. Great man, lived a great life.

I am so sorry for your lose of a husband/father/physician who was a wonderful, dedicated and caring man who loved life. He was my Doctor from the middle 80's until his retirement. He was one of a kind and the Lord called him home, until we meet again! God bless and keep you all! You are all in our prayers!

I am so sorry to hear of Shive's passing. I worked at Specialty Medical Clinic as a Secretary for about 10 years back in the '80s and I truly enjoyed working with him. He always had a smile and a kind word. I am sure you have many happy memories that will hopefully carry you through this difficult time. Take care.

Dear Carol and Family,
I am so saddened to hear about Dr. Shively passing and want to send my deepest sympathy for your loss. He was a wonderful doctor and was so dedicated to his patients and taught me alot while I worked with him as his nurse in the 80's at Specialty Medical Cinic, La Jolla. He really had a special talent to bring the best out of all who worked with him and his compassion for his patients was inspiring. I remember him dressed in uniform for his Army reserve duty and being picked up on the Scripps Hospital helipad by an official Army helicopter as we watched from the Clinic windows.. He was an amazing person and it was an honor to know him.
Sincerely,
David Shively

I met Shive at Scripps Memorial Hospital - La Jolla, where he was a leading cardiologist in a very successful cardiologist group. I have been impressed with Shive's kindness to others and dedications to his patients. As a person, Shive was always friendly, down to earth and joyful to work with. Shive smiled a lot and told us stories about his flying adventures as a private pilot. Shive served as the Chief of Staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital - La Jolla for 2 years, and played a major leadership role in our hospital and laid the foundations for our nationally recognized cardiology program. Carol, my sincere condolences for you and your entire family!

As part of his military family, BG Shively was more than just a commander to me and many others. He gave us a unique part of himself whether in uniform or not. That part included a kind and considerate man who cared about his family. The other part was being himself: playing ball, playing music, and smiling a lot.
I had the privilege of serving with BG Shively as well as working with him in the civilian sector. BG Shively commissioned me as an officer in the Army Reserve and honored me with his presence at my retirement ceremony. This was an example of how much he cared about his family.
I am truly fortunate to have had BG Shively as a mentor. I just wish I could have spent more time with him as a friend outside of the Army.
Mrs. Shively and family: My wife and I are truly sorry for your loss. May you find comfort in God's blessings during this most difficult time.

To say we are sad is an understatement, words seem inadequate to express how profoundly grateful we are to have known and been friends with him. Shive, your talents, your intellect and your caring heart will be hugely missed! Our deepest condolences and prayers for comfort to you, Carol and your entire family.
