Lee Vida Obituary

Lee O. Vida, MD June 22, 1934 - August 7, 2016 La Jolla Lee Vida was born in Chicago on June 22, 1934. In the 1940s the family settled in Macomb, IL. Lee earned his pre-med degree at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and his MD at the University of Illinois Chicago in 1959. Also in 1959, he met and married Marge Wicket in Chicago. They loved each other through nearly 50 years of marriage until Marge's untimely passing. In 2011, Lee married the Vida family's longtime friend, Rhonda Read, of Sydney, Australia. From 1960-62 Lee proudly served as Medical Captain at Luke Air Force base in Phoenix. The Vidas then returned to Macomb, where Dr. Vida practiced general medicine for eight years. During this time, Lee and Marge were blessed with three children, Paul, Jeff and Lori (1970-2013). Dr. Vida then earned an advanced degree in ophthalmology at LSU Charity Hospital in New Orleans. The family eventually settled in La Jolla, where Dr. Vida practiced ophthalmology, specializing in cataract surgery at Scripps and Sharp Hospitals. He gave generously of his time and expertise to the La Jolla community, serving as president of the Rotary Club, as a board member of the La Jolla Community Center, and as a member with his wife Marge, of the La Jolla Presbyterian Church. Lee will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and by the many patients he attended to during his career. We will remember him for his integrity, professionalism and great sense of humor, as well as being a rock solid husband, father and brother.Lee is lovingly survived by his wife, Rhonda; son, Jeff Vida; son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Margaret Vida, and their two children, Eli and Sofy; sister, Virginia Vida of Oakland; step-daughter, Amanda Coalier; and his two step-grandchildren, Ellie and Linden Coalier. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to the La Jolla Community Center, 6811 La Jolla Blvd., La Jolla, CA 92037. Lee was a great man with a big heart and a quick wit. His sincerity, intellect, and generosity will be sorely missed.

This was a truly Christian man, who practiced his profession in a manner consistent with the teaching of his Faith.

As his Pastor, I called on him many times to see poor patients and he did so, sometimes at his own expense. He looked after my family's needs with never a co-pay.

He once told me that he had delivered more than a thousand babies in his earlier practice, before his specialty. One wonders how many nights of sleep were interrupted.

La Jolla has lost one of its best in the passing of Dr. Vida. La Jolla Presbyterian Church was given excellent leadership by him and his former wife, Marge.

May his Lord to raised Lazarus to new life remember this Saint on the Day of Resurrection!

We were saddened to read in the paper today about the passing of Dr. Vida. He and my father, Dean Chenoweth, were high school classmates and long-term friends. As kids, my sister and I loved visiting the Vida house while our parents visited. He left quite a legacy.

I knew Lee Vida, first as a medical colleague, in practice as an ophthalmologist, then I became his patient and respected him even more. He was compassionate and competent and brought the traits from his family practice for long term care into his ophthalmology practice.

I had moved away and returned to La Jolla and in 2009 Lee Vida, MD sponsored me to become a member in the La Jolla Rotary club, where he had once been president and he was still a member.

Like my personal association with Lee, the Rotary Club has been a real addition to my life. I am grateful to him and will miss this fine human being.

Lee was a kind and generous soul and a mentor to me for many years, a founding member and guiding force of our Board at LJCC, and literally my Mentor when I joined La Jolla Rotary. One could not find a better Mentor to stand by your side. Lee was always there, with wisdom and with a kind word. Our lives are richer for having known him, and we shall miss him. Condolences to Rhonda and family.
