Ruth Morpeth
September 20, 1932 - March 13, 2022
Rancho Bernardo
Ruth Elizabeth Wright was born September 20, 1932, in New Jersey, where she later met the love of her life, Stuart Morpeth, at a church bowling alley in Newark. They married April 17, 1954, and moved to Redlands, California, in 1956. They moved to San Diego in 1993.
Ruth taught several elementary grade levels for over 25 years, focusing on art and math. While teaching, she went on to earn a Masters and a PhD in Curriculum Development. Using her degrees, she guided the next generation of teachers at the University of Redlands.
Ruth led a full life. She was a landscape painter, photographer, and weaver. She loved horseback riding, reading, Scottish dancing, and traveling with her husband throughout most of the U.S. and Canada. Ruth and Stuart explored the Arctic Circle, Australia, New Zealand, England, Scotland, Switzerland, Holland, Denmark, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Israel, Egypt, Greece, the Caribbean, and several places in South America (including the Amazon, Machu Pichu, the Faulkland Islands, and the Panama Canal). They even set foot in Antarctica.
Ruth broke molds and defied the odds throughout her life. She was born with only one working lung, lost her mother at 13, and survived both a stroke and open-heart surgery. In spite of societal pressures to stay at home and be a wife and mother, she pursued college and a career. She wasn't afraid to follow her own path.
Ruth passed away on March 13. She is survived by her husband Stuart of 68 years, their children Leslie (and Louie), Chris (and Margot), and Bob (and Mia), four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and her brother Andy (and Alice) Wright of North Carolina.
Ruth had a beautiful heart and was full of warmth. She is missed very much.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 4, 2022, at 1:00 PM at Rancho Bernardo Community Church, 17010 Pomerado Road, San Diego, CA 92128 (
