Sangsoo Ahn Obituary

Sangsoo Ahn passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at the age of 79. He was born to Minsup Ahn and Sooduk Im on April 29, 1942. Originally from Wonsan, Korea, he immigrated in 1977 to Waukegan, IL, where he lived for 43 years. He is survived by his two sons, James (Odette) and John (Nichole); his two grandchildren, Melissa and Matthew; and his siblings, Shinae Ahn, Miae Ahn (Jack) Muhlenbeck, and Sangjoon Ahn. Preceding his death are his parents, Minsup and Sooduk, and his brothers, Sangkyu, Sangkap, and Sangrim Ahn.

Many people may have known Sangsoo as the cheerful mailman for the Gurnee Postal Service who diligently delivered residents' mail on foot for 42 years. However, he did not feel confined to the area in which he worked and resided, as he lived much of his life as a world traveler. From viewing animals on long safaris in Kenya, to strolling around the Eiffel Tower in France, to tubing down the Amazon River (while singing!) in Ecuador, Sangsoo had seemingly explored nearly every part of the globe. Very few people can say that they've visited six continents, but not only could Sangsoo say so, he took pictures of himself in front of countless landmarks in fifty-one countries to prove it.

When Sangsoo wasn't delivering mail or travelling the world, he loved to sing, ballroom dance, and hike. As a fit mailman who once hiked Mt. Kilimanjaro, it was common for him to lap his grandchildren around the pond at Bevier Park, even as he reached his seventies. He also savored buffets, where he would usually finish off a satisfying dinner with an entire ball of cotton candy.

Those who knew Sangsoo will miss him, but they will carry on his curiosity to explore.

Visitation will take place on Monday, June 28, 2021 from 10 AM to 11AM at Gurnee Salata Funeral Home, 4190 Old Grand Ave, Gurnee, IL. Interment follows at Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville, IL.

You will truly be missed. As I have been your mailman for the last 8 years. Everyday I would see you pull in your driveway after you got off and not one time did you moan or groan about your day. You all ways had a smile on your face and me if there was anything I needed. You were truly awesome guy and a great inspiration.

My deepest sympathies to the family. I worked with Sangsoo at the Gurnee Post Office for over 21 years. He was a kind gentleman, a very hard worker and dependable employee of the PO. Loved it when he shared his photos of his worldly journeys. I remember his dedication to taking care of his mother. Rest In Peace, my friend.

We would like to extend our sympathies to the family. I was one of many who worked with your dad at the post office and everyone liked him. Your dad was a hard worker and was well respected. We always looked forward to the pictures from the many trips he took. We were also very happy for him when he retired--allowing him that much more time with family, friends and traveling.
We pray the Blessings of the Lord's unfailing grace will soften the hurt that we are all feeling and bring our hearts the peace, comfort and hope that we need to heal. We pray that the circle of friends and family surrounding you will embrace you and your sorrow and continue to lift you up in prayer. Sincerely, Louise and Chip Knoll
