Gorie Combs Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gorie Wayne Combs, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Gorie passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at the age of 73. Born on October 2, 1952, Gorie was the fourth child of Gorie and Coretha Combs. Raised in Harlem, New York, his formative years were shaped by a strong and steady foundation laid by his parents, nurturing him into a resilient and proud young man.
Coming of age during the vibrant height of Harlem's jazz and cultural movement, Gorie embodied that spirit and style uniquely, blossoming into the "Renaissance Man" we all knew and loved.
Later in life, Gorie proudly served his Country as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. His dedication and commitment to duty were hallmarks of his time in service, and he carried that same sense of responsibility throughout his life. Following his honorable discharge from the Marines, Gorie dedicated many years to the New York City Transit Authority where he was a valued and respected colleague. His strong work ethic and friendly demeanor made him a familiar and welcome presence.
Beyond his professional life, Gorie was affectionately known as "Halo". He had a deep appreciation for music of all kinds. From Jazz and Gospel to R&B and even Salsa, his love and knowledge of all music was unmatched, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry that shaped him. Gorie was a fiercely loyal fan of the New York Knicks, sometimes to his own fault. He faithfully followed each game with unwavering enthusiasm, riding the highs and lows with true dedication. Gorie also had an extraordinary love for cuisine of all kinds. This love was so profound that he created a popular Facebook group called "Food for the Soul," where he enthusiastically shared his own recipes and mouthwatering pictures of food, connecting with a wide community of fellow food enthusiasts. Whether listening to his favorite tunes, sharing a delicious meal with family and friends, cheering on his beloved Knicks, or sharing his culinary creations online, these passions brought Gorie immense pleasure and created lasting memories. Gorie will be deeply missed by his wife, Bridget, his children, Gorie, II, Chloe, and Chanel; his grandchildren, Emani, Isiah and Brielle; his sister, Brenda; his beloved nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. His kind heart, infectious smile, his unwavering loyalty, and his zest for life will be remembered by all who knew him.
A celebration of Wayne's life will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2025, in the Chapel of Combs Funeral Home.
