Paul Volckening Obituary

Paul Volckening, 88, loving husband and father passed away in his Santa Fe home on Aug. 13, 2016.

He is survived by his wife, Christine; and sons, Laurence Volckening of California and Christian Volckening of Missouri.

Paul was born in Mineola, N.Y. on Jan. 20, 1928, and became an important potter in the American studio movement. He received his B.A. from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, Ca., and his M.A. from Mills College. In 1958 a Fulbright grant took him to Finland, where he worked in the Arabia Factory in Helsinki. In the '60s, he was an important part of the art department at New Mexico Highlands University, where he taught pottery, describing those years fondly.

Paul made pottery on the west coast and finally in Santa Fe. He stopped when he was 80 but his love of clay never ended.

Paul was a kind and loving person whose life was so much more than these few words. He was so loved.

Cremation has taken place and his ashes are to be scattered.
