Aimee Gerace Obituary

December 17, 1982 - October 13, 2023 Aimee Irshay Gerace passed away on October 13, 2023 at the age of 40. She died of breast cancer, an illness she faced with unfathomable grace, dignity, and courage. Aimee was born in Tarzana, CA and lived in Los Angeles for most of her life. She graduated from Tulane University in 2005 and Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 2013. She served as the Director of Educational Engagement at Temple Isaiah for 4 years and most recently as the Education Director at Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center. Aimee was a beloved rabbi in her community, and led with grace, sensitivity, and compassion.

Aimee married Marco Gerace on October 13, 2013 and she is survived by Marco and their two wonderful children, Carson and Amalia (Mali) Gerace. Aimee is also survived by her parents and step-parents, siblings and step-siblings, aunt, uncle, and cousins, nieces and nephews, mother-in-law, and many friends; Stephen Irshay, Ellen Braun, Abbe Irshay, David Braun, Dana Irshay Petro, Joe Petro, Brittany Irshay Booth, Andrew Booth, Eric Irshay, Eric Braun, Lauren Braun, Elisabeth Braun-Lilenfeld, Casey Lilenfeld, Barbara Zipperman, Don Zipperman, Max Zipperman, Hannah Zipperman, Benjamin (Benny) Petro, Audrey Petro, Kenley Booth, Henry Braun, Rose Braun, Charlotte Lilfenfeld, and Lois Gerace.

To know Aimee was to adore her. It is difficult to fully express how devastating Aimee's passing is to her family, friends, and community. She was unfailingly kind, stunningly brilliant, and riotously funny. In her capacity as a rabbi, she was often called on to officiate weddings, baby namings, etc. for her family and community, and she infused each ceremony with her signature style, and received standing ovations for her "performances" on more than one occasion. Her children are a testament to how loving and warm and nurturing she was, and they are carrying on the best parts of her: her sensitivity, generosity, intelligence, humor, sass, inimitable style, and joie de vivre.

Aimee felt deeply connected to New Orleans and Israel, and was thankfully able to return to both places in the last months of her life. She would have been devastated to hear about the tragedy that took place in Israel in the last week of her life, but she was mercifully unaware of the events that transpired. Aimee devoted her life to serving the Jewish community, and she fiercely believed that Jews deserve a place to feel safe and to call home. To witness the terrorism against our people in the same week that we have lost our beloved Aimee compounds our grief indescribably.

There are no words to soothe the ache in our hearts. Aimee was the best of us, and she was senselessly taken from this world far too soon. We will miss her forever. We were all fortunate to have her in our lives. Services will be held at Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center at 5:00pm on Sunday, October 22. Donations can be made to Sharsheret or the Jewish National Fund in Aimee's honor.

Rabbi Aimee was the officiant at my wedding. She was so welcoming, warm, and went out of her way to make sure I was comfortable with Jewish traditions. After my husband, David, passed away from cancer right after our baby was born, Rabbi Aimee drove all the way to Oxnard to conduct the naming ceremony for my son. She told me that day about her health challenges and I felt so humbled by her generosity. She said it was very important for her to be present for my son and I. I will never, never forget that gesture and act of kindness. I am raising my son without a father and it breaks my heart her children are experiencing this loss. I hope they will always will remember that their mother was a deeply spiritual, enlightened, and generous woman

Rabbi Aimee was such a powerful force in the role she had at Bnai Simcha, the Jewish preschool that shares the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center´s campus. I taught the three year old Frog Class for years, and I met her when Carson joined my class just before he turned three. And Carson was funny, brilliant and loving-just like Aimee. When Rabbi Aimee led our Friday Shabbat Sings, she communicated her joy in our Jewish faith and heritage through stories and songs which touched our hearts- from the youngest kids totheir parents. My love and prayers for comfort to the family. I am so, so sorry you have lost Aimee.

I have seen so many people comment that Aimee was a Light in the world. This could not be more true. Her spirit and energy radiated to everyone around her. I am forever blessed and privileged that she married me and my husband - she had truly found her calling in life and it showed in every way possible.

We are absolutely heartbroken to hear of Aimee's passing. The obituary could not be more beautiful, and though it has been over 20 years since we have seen Aimee, your incredible words describe her just as we remember her - brilliant, bubbly, beautiful, joyful, hilarious, clever, inspirational and the best, kindest, most caring friend to everyone. "The best of us" is so right.

We always loved seeing Aimee with her family and hearing how much she adored all of you. To to this day, through all the families we have known and worked with, we still think Aimee and Steve had the most wonderful father-daughter relationship ever. They so palpably loved and enjoyed each other. We can still picture them making each other laugh so hard...

Our hearts go out to all of you, and we will continue to send much love and strength to Steve and Ellen and Dana and all of Aimee's family and friends. Please know we share your heartbreak, and we will cherish our memories of Aimee forever.

I´ve been wondering lately how many times our hearts can
break and continue to keep beating.

Aimee´s light was so incredibly bright. She shined warmth and love on those of us who were lucky enough to be in her presence.

Senseless indeed.

She will be missed by so so many. Offering love, compassion and patience to her family...
