MEYER, Albert J., M.D. (72)
Renowned downtown Los Angeles Orthopedic Surgeon and family man of Pasadena / La Canada / San Marino & Somis, passed away peacefully in Camarillo, CA on February 7, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Patricia and his 5 children with Mary Rhomberg Meyer, his first wife (deceased 1986 after a 12 year struggle with Multiple Sclerosis), Paul (Wendy), Ann (Leonard) Brazil, Nancy (Scott) Decker, Molly (Ed) Gervais and Karl (Dessa), his sister Lois Kane, and 10 grandchildren, and many grateful patients and fellow physicians whom he served and assisted while practicing medicine in the Los Angeles area from 1961-2000, principally at Good Samaritan Hospital. Al Meyer was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated from St. Augustine's Grade School, Dowling High School and the University of Iowa, where he studied medicine and specialized in Orthopedic Surgery. Al Meyer married Mary Rhomberg in 1954 in Dubuque, Iowa. After an internship at St. Louis City Hospital, he served as Lt. Colonel at the US Naval Hospital in St. Albans, NY from 1958-1961. After moving his family to Pasadena in 1961, Dr. Meyer became a partner in the esteemed firm of Wilson, McKeever, Rodi, Blanche, Van Steenvort & Meyer. Al Meyer and his family were active members of St. Bede's Catholic Church in La Canada for over 30 years, where he married Patricia Best of Leeds, England and a former patient, in 1987. He was a leader in the Western Orthopedic Society, Secretary of Wilson-Bost Interurban Club, a member of the Advisory Board of Greater LA Zoo, and contributed his time to the USC School of Medicine as a volunteer faculty member. Dr. Meyer was once a member of the Jonathan Club and later Annandale Golf Club. Dr. Meyer also helped the St. Francis High School football program with orthopedic injuries from 1973-1980. He was a wonderful and kind husband, father, doctor and friend who will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched. A man from a modest background, who first saw an ocean at 21, Al Meyer traveled frequently to Europe, Africa and Asia in his later years. A Memorial Mass service will be celebrated at 10:00 AM at St. Bede's Catholic Church, 215 Foothill Blvd, La Canada Tuesday, February 12. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Orthopedic Institute, Good Samaritan Hospital, c/o Development Office 1225 Wilshire Blvd, LA 90017 in his memory.
