Allen Bloom Obituary

May 23, 1925 - December 30, 2017 Allen Herbert Bloom, 92, passed away December 30, 2017 in Los Angeles, California after a brief illness. Allen was born May 23, 1925 to David and Sylvia (Kahan) Bloom (the original family surname is Shmuelovitch) in Jersey City, New Jersey. Allen served proudly and with distinction in the army's 161st infantry regiment on Luzon during WWII. After the war, he moved to California and worked at a variety of jobs, including airplane mechanic, TV cameraman, auto mechanic and service station owner. California was a lucky move for Allen, as it was there that he met the love of his life, Joyce (Asher). After his marriage to Joyce, Allen continued to pursue his lifelong interest in planes, boats, and automobiles. Allen shone for many years as a docent at the Museum of Flying in Santa Monica, where he shared his knowledge and enthusiasm and was a favorite guide to teachers and their students who visited on field trips. Allen is survived by his son, Gary (Junko) Bloom; daughter, Dana (Tony) Smith; granddaughters Arisa Bloom and Kendal and Avery Smith; sister, Helene (George) Chirinian, and nieces and nephews. Allen was preceded in death by his wife Joyce and a sister, Beatrice Bloom. Allen spent the last several years of his life at the Veterans Home of California-West Los Angeles. He received the best and most loving care, and the family wishes to thank all residents and staff who knew him there for helping him remain positive, active, and happy. Memorial donations may be made to the Museum of Flying at www.museumofflying.org and checks can be sent to the Museum of Flying, 3100 Airport Avenue, Santa Monica, CA 90405.
