Anne Chapman Obituary

August 1, 1944 - December 16, 2020 Anne B Chapman, artist, traveler, and loving mother and grandmother, died December 16, 2020 in Altadena. She was born Anne Laurel Beardwood in Berkeley on August 1, 1944 and grew up on her family's orange grove in Ontario, California. After graduating from Chaffey High School, she studied in Denmark, then attended Occidental College where she studied studio art. She went on to work at the Huntington Library, where she made many lifelong friends. In 1966, Anne met Bruce Chapman, who she married in 1967 and supported as he earned his PhD at Caltech. After living in Tierrasanta, California, and Reston, Virginia, they settled in La Jolla in 1977 to raise their family. Bruce died in 1981, after a long illness, throughout which Anne was strong and fearless for him and her children. Anne stayed in La Jolla until moving to Altadena in 2016. Like Anne, her home and garden were welcoming, artistically eclectic and full of love. She was an honorary mom to her children's friends, and enjoyed hosting long term guests. Anne was an energetic volunteer and patron of the arts, whose career path continued to center around art and creativity. She was a longtime member of the Globe Guilders organization, and was one of the volunteer staff that helped launch the Children's Museum of San Diego. She became the Store Manager, and built it into a destination in its own right. Anne then worked at the Museum Company for several years until its closing. She said she'd get a new job if she got bored of retirement – which she didn't. Anne created art throughout her life, finding special pleasure in printmaking and the community of Bay Park Press. She also enjoyed traveling with friends, especially when it included architectural tours, gardens, art museum and studio visits, or opera performances. In addition to visiting family and friends across the US, she explored China, Costa Rica, Germany, Italy, Iceland, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. Anne is survived by her brother, Bruce Beardwood (Nancy); her children, John (Allison) and Amelia Chapman (Terry McGlynn); and her grandchildren Bruce McGlynn, and Ava and Adam Chapman. She was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Gail Beardwood; a brother, Paul Beardwood; her husband Bruce, and her parents George and Betty (née Fox) Beardwood. An in-person celebration of Anne's life will take place when it is safe. In the meantime, please share your stories of Anne on the online memorial. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to local Alzheimer's disease charities.

Anne is never far from my mind. She was such an important part of my life. Our travels live on in my mind and memory. So often a location we visited will come up in the news for some reason and I think to myself I was there with Anne. She is greatly missed.

Anne was an amazing person. My first “boss” at the Children’s Museum. A wonderful friend to my mom. I have wonderful memories of her being a fantastic baker - snickerdoodles a d lemon bars in particular, if my memory serves me. She will be missed. ❤

I only knew Anne when she moved to Altadena and had the opportunity to see her taking walks with Amelia or out doing things around town. Here’s a shot of Amelia, Terry, Bruce and Anne enjoying the wacky Doo Dah Parade from their curbside seats a few years ago. Though I did not get the chance to know her well, I do know that she will be missed. Sending love to the Chapman extended family.

Anne was a very special friend to me from the time we met as "kindergarten mothers" with our oldest daughters to the multitude of trips we enjoyed together all over the world and the US. We also loved going to the La Jolla Playhouse for many years, as well as the San Diego Symphony. As we were both widows, we could decide to go out to dinner or a movie at the drop of a hat. I miss her companionship and cherish her memory.
